Are xcel scores trending higher than in the past? I was following state meet scores this weekend and noticed really high scores. For example when my daughter competed xcel gold three seasons ago only 5% of the kids got a 37.0 or higher all around score., with no scores of 38.0 or higher. At a the state meet that I was following, 12% of kids on gold had a 38.0 or higher and 46% of kids had a 37.0-37.9 score. This seems crazy to me when just a few years ago only a small handful of kids got 37.0 or higher. Did the scoring get easier or are kids bypassing the lower DP levels for xcel which is trending the scores higher. There is double the amount of kids in gold now compared to a few years ago. I don’t see this trend at the upper xcel levels.

Just observation from our state - it is the sandbagging. Our state judges harsh in general; gyms that transition kids from xcel to DP actually tend to compete more difficult skills to prepare for optionals, so no it is not that. It is the gyms that keeping kids on lower xcel levels for 3-4 years and the ones that compete bare minimum to win…
