okay so I just competed last weekend and got a floor score that wasn’t my best and my coach felt it was underscored a bit so she asked the judges where the deductions had come from. I’ve always been told that I have really good artistry and show my floor routine really well. I love to add facials and really just enjoy doing floor and showing my dance off. This weekend though the judges told my coach that my facials were “too much” and because of that they took .1 now I’m curious is this a deduction they can take? One of the judges on the table knows me personall, as her daughter was my coach and I switched coaches because this judges daughter was a terrible coach and person. I’m wondering if this deduction could be more of a jab at me than the actual routine as my floor and facials is kind of what I’m known for and I’ve never been told it’s been too much. My coach is now asking me to tone down the facials but I don’t really know how to as they just come out as I do floor because I am having fun. Just curious if this is a real deduction as I’ve heard of not enough facials and boring dance, but I’ve never heard of a “too much”deduction. Maybe I’m just overreacting because I know the judge personally but just wanted some outside opinions.

I'm not a judge, so I could be wrong, but I have never heard of a too much deduction. However, I do recommend watching your routine back if you can, and doing those same facials in the mirror to double check. I doubt that you are doing to much though, it sounds like the judge has a personal vendetta against you

Without seeing you routine or knowing what set of rules you are competing under, we can't really specifically tell you.
As an obvious example if you had big smile, happy/cheeky face but were performing to dark/serious music - I absolutely would deduct under an FIG based code.

I’ve heard of coaches deriding excessive facials as “all star cheer” but not judges taking deductions for it. If it doesn’t match the music as said previously or is so much it’s flat-out distracting, that might be the problem.

I’ve noticed that different regions and levels have different cultures of facials so maybe you’ve stumbled into that.
