My 6y/o L4 GD was just diagnosed with asthma. Even though her doctor said that gymnastics is OK and that she can't lose everything because of this illness, I was worried about her participation till I did some research and found this quote:

"Common sports, that are less likely to precipitate or aggravate asthma are: walking, jogging, hiking, golf, gymnastic, volleyball, wrestling and short track and field events."

Thank You Lord! Baby Girl sleeps and breathes gymnastics! Now over-protective Granny can relax.

My son has had asthma since he was a baby and did gymnastics until he was 16 yo. at 6 months old he was on a nebulizer 7 times a day. As he got older he was able to move to an inhaler. we kept the inhaler in his locker at the gym or in his gym bag at meets and eveyone knew it was there if he ever needed it. Usually in competition the coach had it on his person so after an event if he needed it it was right there. IN all the time he did gymnastics he only needed it once and it was when the gym had them run out side on a high pollen day in the summer in 90 degree weather. needless to say I stopped that as soon as I knew it was happening and he did his running in the comfort of the gym. He is now 19 yo and like many kids with asthma he has out grown it for the most part. He still has an inhaler just in case but hasn't used it in over 5 years. So don't worry about it too much just make sure that things that could trigger an attack are avoided if possible - like my son avoiding running in unhealth air quality out side.

my DD has asthma as well. She has been doing gymnastics for 5yrs. She has only had 2 bad attacks @ gym. both invilved running (one of her triggers) & newer coaches who didn't understand her limits. she can run @ a slow pace, like a jog. they kept telling her to run faster so she did until she could hardly breathe. the other time was doing suicides & same thing she was told sshe was going too slow. anyway, she keeps an inhaler in her gym bag. now she does her inhaler before running laps, that has helped keep it at bay.

also if she gets a cold or it is cold outsude she has to be careful. no reason for your kiddo to quit. just know her triggers. make sure everyone working with her knows she has asthna & where her inhaler is & what her triggers are. if running is one have her use it prior to running. our doctor suggested & it vas helped a lot.

The same happened to my DD.

At her current gym, she uses her inhaler before any running, has not had any problems. She keeps an inhaler in her gym bag at all times, including meets. She is now 11, diagnosed at 20 months, has been doing gymnastics since she was 3.
