DD's teammate just broke her middle finger the week after states. It was close to the knuckle, but thankfully missed the most important bits. She was told she's out a minimum of 5 weeks, though she, too begged to condition, and has so far actually attended full practices to help "coach" her teammates. I think her recheck is next week - she could potentially need another 1-2 weeks, but they're hopeful that's not the case.

Hope it's relatively minor and that your DD can at least finish the season strong! Good luck and do keep us posted!

If it is her foot, then it is probably going to be more like 6 weeks in a boot/brace/cast/etc and anywhere from 8-12 weeks until she is 100%. That's my best guess if it is a foot. So no meet. Keeping my fingers crossed that its minor :)

I sorry to hear this. We went thru a hip avulsion fracture and ortho told us 6 weeks depending on pain levels and that if reinjured it could mean surgery. She was back on light duty in 4 weeks.

My DD had surgery last Thursday to fix an avulsion fracture in her elbow. They had to place a screw and washer to bring the "funny bone" back where it belongs. 2 weeks in a hard cast, then 10 weeks in a mobility brace. No weight bearing for 12 weeks!!! We have cancelled all plans for meets this season. Hopefully, the prognosis is different with avulsion a in the foot and elbow.

oh no! I'm sorry to hear about all these injuries. It's awful to see your child hurt.
I've been looking around myself about recovery times as my DD was just diagnosed with a sprain or SH1 fracture (ankle).
I'm hoping that the time off will make her stronger with all the conditioning and make her realize she really does like competing (she has just started saying she does not like competing).
And no, I'm not considering the possibility that she'll be thrilled she doesn't have to compete.
Here's to speedy recoveries all around!

Good news!!! Basically, she's been cleared to exercise at tolerance. The orthopedist said what the radiologist at urgent care saw as the avulsion fracture could be a small one or could be just the growth plate? He said either way, the treatment is the same-listen to her body. I'm not sure I fully understand it, but I'm THRILLED he said there is no need for a cast and she can put weight on it as she feels comfortable. She is still tentative to put much weight on it, but I have felt that way when recovering from an injury. It feels "wrong" to suddenly use a body part normally even when the specialist says it's ok! So hopefully she'll feel a little more comfortable for practice tomorrow. (She did go Wednesday and yesterday, but did only conditioning and some bars) I can't imagine she'll be able to compete next Sunday, but I'll have to see how she feels and what her coaches think. The fourth meet is two weeks after that (1/30) so hopefully she'll be ok for that one!!! Thanks for everyone's advice and good mojo....

That is good news. Hope she's able to trust herself to sue but also listen to her body and stop when she needs to.

Yes, I also fear this!

That's great news! Little surprised tho - but he is your doctor so I guess I should trust him :) I've just never seen a fracture, especially in the growth plate been put to a "listen to your body" kind of thing. But, I trust him, and that is wonderful news. So happy for your dd.

"Could be?"

Did he push on the growth plate to see if she has intolerable pain? Some fractures are diagnosed clinically, because x-rays are not perfect. If it's a fracture on the growth plate it will not even show up. Since the diagnosis is so vague, I would be extremely conservative with her return to full participation.

I guess he thinks what the other doctor thought was the fracture is really the growth plate? But it's hard to tell with kids? He thought if the other foot were x-rayed it would look the same. I agree, I was surprised! Sorry, maybe I'm not explaining it well. I don't think I fully understand it. But thanks! I am just happy it's not as bad as they originally thought!

Yes. That was his whole explanation. That even though he couldn't definitively see a fracture, if she were in pain when he was pressing on it he would have considered it fractured. But she was fine. He asked her several times if x, y and z hurt, and it appeared he was pressing fairly firmly, and she kept saying it didn't hurt. I agree that I'm not feeling 100% warm and fuzzy yet, but I'm just glad it's not as bad as they originally thought.

So I actually got to watch about 45 min of practice this morning since my older daughter wanted to try the gym's "Ninja course" class. I saw Puma Jr do her full bar routine (L4) so the jump to high bar and dismount involved the foot and she actually looked ok..(her kips are still a hot mess, but that's a different story lol) .I agree with you guys that I'm a little nervous about her overdoing it, but I have told her about 300 times to listen to her body and all her coaches are fully aware of the situation. I am very interested to here what they (and she) have to say when I pick her up...thanks again for all the good mojo and advice!

Well that's different then. IME, UC doctors are known for misreading x-rays (especially thinking a growth plate is a fracture), so it sounds like, as the ortho says, she is fine.

So you've heard of this before?! That's reassuring, thank you! I can only assume it's not fractured if she could do her full bar routine today without appearing to be in pain. She still didn't want to run on it today, and was tentative to do much beyond bars, but even assuming it's not fractured, sprains can still be very painful! So rest tomorrow and hopefully Monday she can do more. She desperately wants to do the meet next Sunday, but I feel like that's pretty unlikely. Thanks again for your advice :)
