Women Avulsion Fracture of 5th Metatarsal

Anyone ever have any experience with this? DD hurt herself tumbling last night (landing in a crack in the mat) and this is the diagnosis from the ER. Going to see ortho tomorrow. What are healing times like and are they ever the same after?! Thanks!

Oh no! Poor thing we had a much less severe toe break (I believe avulsion is when a tendon/ligament pulls a chunk of bone away, right?) my DD couldn't do much for almost 2 weeks though the orthopedist said she could do whatever didn't hurt. She was back close to 100% by the 4th week and competed 6 &1/2 weeks after the injury. But again, this was a straight break...even the avulsion though I don't think they do much for? You're definitely smart to get it checked out by the specialist though! GOOD LUCK!!!!

DS had this from trampoline.....3 weeks....doc casted him (because hes a boy) on for 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone. Will see ortho tomorrow. They had no appointments today. I will let you know. She's in a ton of pain which makes me worry because usually she is a trooper.

DD had exact same diagnoses, happened same way, crack in the mat! She wore a boot for 4 weeks, then gradually eased back to full workouts/competition by week 10. During the entire time, she went to practice everyday to do what she could (basically, swing bars) and conditioning. However, her run for vault was impacted longer. Her fracture happened mid-January, and she was competing by March/April, but her vault was not back to normal probably till the fall.

I have had a gymnast start to come back from this injury in about 2 months. It only becomes chronic if they have weak ankles that turn easily. Since it was caused by an uneven landing surface, it should heal well. My gymnast's did (also landed on an uneven surface).

I got myself an avulsion fracture at the bottom of the ankle joint two weeks ago. When I did it it was swollen and bruised instantly, but because it was an ankle that already had ongoing problems related to mistreated ligament tears I assumed it was fine, and walked on it for 2 days. Now I'm stuck in plaster for 6 weeks with a further 3-4 weeks in a boot afterwards. But sports ortho has said I can return to training when I'm in the boot definitely need to see an ortho on this, the A&E doctor I saw said 2 weeks in plaster and the fracture and ligaments would be healed enough to lose the crutches and get back in the gym never can be too sure until you've seen a specialist.

My DD had the exact same injury a few years ago. She was in a boot for 5-6 weeks. She continued to go to practice for conditioning the entire time. Last year she broke her big toe and I feel like she had a rougher road to recovery with the toe, maybe because the growth plate was involved.

As long as it is an avulsion fracture and not a Jones' it should heal like a normal break does (4-6 weeks). Jones' fracture is the one that would be considered a season ending injury (if she was entering into "season time"), they usually take around 4 months to heal, if surgery wasn't done.
