Derek saw the doc today for his back. We saw a DO that does OMT (osteopathic manipulation techniques). It seems to be a combo pt, chiro, and massage. She had reviewed all the info from docs/orthos so I was impressed

First we talked about whether or not the MRI missed a stress fracture. She said she thought the same thing, but there was nothing on the MRI from the ortho or the radiologist. She did a further exam with no real evidence of a stress fracture. So that was a relief.

So she did some work with him. Feels that the muscles are really really really tight. I guess on the MRI they can see that the muscles are pulling on the spine, so that could be the pain. They have straightened out his natural curve a bit, so I am sure when he arches, it would hurt.

She prescribed some lidocaine patches for him to try. 12 hours on, 12 hours off, to see if that will help. She wants to get the pain to go away so he can use the muscles which will loosen them up. Right now, they are so tight, that they hurt so he doesn't use them, which makes them tighter, which makes them hurt more, and so on and so on.

We start tomorrow. Fingers crossed that this helps. He goes back to the DO in 2 weeks.

I really hope this works!! PT has done wonders for my gymmies. Hoping the same for yours!!!

Good news. Glad to hear there is no fracture. Remember to stretch diagonally as well. Not just pike flexon. :-)

examples please.

I hope this helps. he needs some positive news

Skschlag,
this is a good example.
Can also be done lying supine or sitting and cross one leg over at 90 deg if he can't get into the full tuck because of the tight rear. The main culprit for lower back pain is the erector spinae, but the secondary movers need to be targeted also: glutes, piriformis and obliques. (In gymnasts it is usually not the abs or extensors) It is all about some muscles compensating for other either weaker or misused ones. Just make sure that the strength program is balanced for the whole system. Please remember I am not a doctor, I only play one in the gym :-)
