Hi!

I’m a level 7 gymnast, and last year I completed a BHS step out on beam for level 6. I never quite mastered it due to a mental block. However, after missing both hands, my series was switched to something else.

I’ve recently realized that after I jump to go back into my BHS, my hips twist to the left, (I’m a righty) my shoulders twist, and my legs straddle. This makes it scary, hard to land, and hard to get my hands on, which is why I missed both hands in the first place.

I’ve tried countless reps on a low beam with mats and spots, I’ve tried doing it on a floor beam, doing it on a line, and I’ve tried using a barrel. But every time I get back on the beam on my own, I can’t seem to fix these corrections.

I have been competing Cartwheel Roundoff and Cartwheel Cartwheel since, but I know this is not ideal for the long run. My coaches have been very patient, but they are not sure how to fix my habit. They suggested putting the other hand in front, but I really don’t think it would help, nor do I want to go through with it. I could really use some advice from anyone at all. Tips, examples, drills or anything that might help would be greatly appreciated. I really need this skill back! Thank you for your time!

Which hand are you putting in front on your BHS?

If you have the same hand forward as the Kory that steps out, the hips and body will move run that way and the BHS will be crooked:

If you have the opposite hand in front it will help to correct the hip twist by pulling it the other way and square up the BHS.

You can practice this doing lots of split handstands with correct BHS hands.

I am a righty and I put my left hand in front. But even with the opposite hand, (Left hand, right leg) I twist sideways. How do I correct this?
