My DD's old gym uses them. For all the years my DD was there she used them. it basicly is a piece of elastic about 2 inches wide (you can make them easy for alot cheaper then they sell them for) The old gym had the girls names embroidered on them I think more as a name tag so the coaches could remember the names LOL. but basicly its supposed to be a little tight worn around the mid point on the gymnast to help them to remember to keep their tummys sucked in and give the coach a visual to see if tumbling is spinning on the mid point or not.

If your gym doesn't use them or require them then I wouldn't bother with them - they just get really dirty and more often than not get lost.

for $4 you can get alot of 2" elastic. Probably enough for the whole team. You just measure the elastic around the waist making it a lilttle tight with about a 2 inch over lap. sew the over lap area with an X and it will hold. but if everyone else is getting one then go for it. It doesn't really do anything other than give the coach a point of her mid line really.

I think they're just a prop. I've seem gyms that use them and the kids tend to forget they are wearing them within a few minutes. If the coaches need them to see if the kid is rotating correctly, I'd consider finding another gym with coaches that have better vision. :)
