Hello!
I'm curious how many gyms out there mark up their competition leotards, and how much do you mark them up? I am in charge of designing our new xcel leotards, and I got excited that I was able to design one at a very reasonable price. But then my boss said we will have to mark them up. I personally don't agree with this. So I was just curious how other gyms do it. Thanks!

We mark ours up... but not a ton. We definitely cover all the costs involved with them... including the labor cost involved in dealing with the leotard companies. We also order extra leotards just in case... we cover the cost of these as well.

We typically run 3 different styles of leotards for our team... a low cost tank... a spangled / sequin 3/4 sleeve... and a full rhinestone 3/4 sleeve. We typically mark them up from around $10 to $25.

We will not order extra rhinestone leotards... extras will only be ordered in the two cheaper styles. Below are what we charged last year...

Tank Leotard $59.95 + tax
Sequins Long Sleeve $180 + tax
Rhinestone Long Sleeve $260 + tax

Our gym is pretty transparent about the leotards being marked up a little bit ($20-$35 depending on how many athletes are purchasing that year). We have two leo options. A rhinestone tank for lower levels (around $150 after markup ), and a rhinestone long sleeve for upper levels (around $400 after markup). There used to be a middle 3/4 spangles that was offered to those who would need the long sleeve the next year, but after covid we got rid of that, and now those athletes have the option to keep wearing the tank leo for the off year that we don't get new leos.

Thanks! This seems reasonable. I talked to a coach friend of mine who said they mark theirs up by nearly $100 😧 that to me is nuts.

We mark all of our competition stuff up just enough to cover the cost of postage - so not at all really, a couple of dollars more than the tag price, and probably less than a parent would pay for postage if they ordered directly.

We debate it almost every year before deciding that the sport is expensive enough without trying to profit from the compulsory attire. We sell merch - T-shirts, hoodies, training crops etc at a very good mark up, but they are entirely optional items.

Thanks, that's exactly my mentality. A little extra for shipping, fine. But not more then that.
