explain the differences to parents and girls clearly - many families will choose xcel from the get go willingly regardless of the gym’s focus. To some girls, gym is all they want, to others, gym is one of their many sports. Families would appreciate information on hours, requirements, trajectories, costs, etc and be able to make an informed decision. So, how do we do that when the priority seems to be on Devo in the gym? How do we make this balance more efficient for the whole gym?
We do some of this. Buddy program is with the whole team. My L9 has a bronze buddy. We also do events with optionals and platinum/ diamond together. My best advice is to make sure the Xcel coaches are knowledgeable and experienced, and that they are passionate about and dedicated to the Xcel program. Make sure that the Dev coaches do not use moving a gymnast to Xcel a threat for failing to meet current expectations. The Dev coaches should express respect for the Xcel program at all times. We do this by jumping in and helping out with Xcel rotations (and Xcel coaches cover Dev rotations), loudly cheering for Xcel gymnasts getting a new skill; actively engaging with Xcel gymnasts and coaches so there is no appearance of any sort of divide. The goal here is to make Xcel an attractive alternative for gymnasts who are finding Dev to be too much time, commitment etc. but still enjoy gymnastics. We want them to stay in the sport and not leave it entirely!
Also, when you can, combine Xcel and Dev for gym events and activities - like a big sister, little sister program; team outings to college meets if available in your area; holiday parties at the gym; summer bonding activities (we go to a local water park as an end of summer event) etc. The goal is to make it feel like you are one big team - and not two separate teams.
