So the big joke around our house right now is that DH is going to join the adult open gym that happens once a week during DD's team practice. DD is horrified, but DH has found a new life-long dream of learning to do a handstand and backhandspring. I can't really imagine DH actually learning the backhandspring the way that DD learned it (bridges, backwalkovers, etc...). It took DD more than a year to get a decent backhandspring. Will this be the only way for DH to learn it? We tease DH that he will have to go through levels 1-3 before learning a backhandspring. LOL.

well...as long as the health insurance premiums have been paid up and a hospital emergency room is not too far away, why not?:)

Great idea, there are lots of adult classes these days, and they rarely start with the beginner moves adults want the big skills. A BWO is probably not attainable, but a BT or FT or even a BHS are certainly in his reach. Tell him to start with basic conditioning, just like DD does and then get in the gym!

What a great bonding expirence for DD and DH. I'm sure your DD will "help" him condition, she can be his personal trainer. I'm glad she is a bit embarrassed, that's what memories are made of. Those moments in childhood when we yell "DAAAAAAAAAAD" are the time we talk about for ever!

That's great! I'm 45 and have been going to adult class for two years and I love it. I've been working on BHS, spotted by my wonderful coach. We do bridges but not walkovers. We do lots of handstands and round-offs. How long skills take to learn varies hugely between individuals. I hope your DH enjoys it as much as I do!

I remember when I was a teenager there were all these guys who used to throw multiple backhandsprings and back tucks out in the field after school. I am positive none of these kids had ever set foot in a gym (not a gymnastics gym anyhow, they lifted weights and played basketball in our school gym though) nor had they ever tried a backwalkover or a bridge. The never had a spot or any sort of formal training, they just threw these tricks with the fearlessness of teenage boys. It seems to me that guys (at least guys who are in pretty good shape) can power through a lot of moves, especially if all they really want to do is be able to impress people by doing backflips and aren't really trying to learn proper form or need to worry about progressions.

So tell your husband to go for it! I am willing to bet he'd get his backhandspring, maybe sooner than he thinks!

I think as long as he is in shape, it sounds like a lot of fun! I hope he is able to fulfill his dream!

My husband is obsessed with gymnastics training and even put a set of rings in our basement. He loves doing it and is always looking for gymnastics workouts online. He would love to go to open gym and try all the equipment out. When we are at the gym waiting on the girls I can see him eyeing the boys equipment and wanting to jump on and try the pummel horse. I have to remind him not too LOL. Glad my dh isn't the only one!
