Do DS has had a rough year, year and a half.
I posted about his wrist injury that persisted for 9 months and then finally arthroscopic surgery 6 months ago.

From when he was on top, he had a great L5 year, went to finish 3rd at regionals. Then had a very good first L6 year, and finished 6th at states. He was 10/11 at the time.

Now he is 13. He has hung on through endless conditioning and physical therapy. Trying to do skills and not being able. watching teammates move a level or two....Mom and Dad pushing other sports. (a staunch NO! from him) But he tried, Diving, Soccer, Football, basketball....No....still gymnastics. He still went to practice. Even though he could do very little.

He is bigger now. Almost in HS yikes!!!

The past few week however, he is back on pommel doing L7 routine....Rings he is L6....floor he is working L6/7 skills.....High bar needs WORK.....Pbars not so bad....Maybe L7??? Some hard skills are still there, others are gone.

Could he be coming back???? I pray he can make his goal of L7 by summer and L8 by fall....Only if his body cooperates.....I am proud of him either way.

I really, really, really hope he makes it! If he gets to a place where he can really be working skills full time (is here there now?, I bet he's going to progress fast. If all goes well, could he maybe do a few meets at L7 to get his feet under him and then start L8 with routines that really fit where he is on each individual event?

I hope that all goes well for him! So impressive that he worked through this and stuck with the sport he loves!

I've heard this is very common with boys. We have a few boys at our gym going through similar things. Our coaches have compared boys to roller coasters! Their seasons go up and down like crazy. Just a generalization, but I hope it's encouraging. Good luck to you both! What a tough place to be!

Head Coach and the facility director asked to use my DS as a test for personal training. Since our gym does NOT have weights, or anything, they are going to pair up with the adult gym to give these kids specialized weight training to complement gymnastics. Apparently it is very common for 12-13-14 yo to give up since their muscles have not caught up with their size and injuries begin to happen.
We will see.....i will let you know, but it sounds good.

One of DS's 13 year old teammates is doing this too. The logic behind it seems sound to me.

I am so glad he is still at it! What amazing dedication. I bet he will get there by fall! I hope the weight training helps. Keep us posted on how that goes!
