Hello, my daughter is definitely at a very drama filled gym. The girls are always mad at each other in someway and get into a lot of fight. The other day, my daughter told me 2 girls were making code words and not including her in them and wouldn’t tell her what they were. Then her and another girl started making code words aswell and they got very mad and said they were copying them and that it was probably about them. It turned into a huge argument and I really don’t get how! My daughter obviously kept on asking them what it meant so I get that would be annoying to those girls, but then again these girls love drama. I would like to help fix it as gymnastics is not the place for gossiping or drama so do yall have any tips for dealing with drama in the gym?

Unfortunately that’s typical tween behavior. They will grow out of it in time and/or the most annoying kids will leave the sport. In the meantime maybe you and the other gym moms can plan an outing for the girls (ice cream after a practice is always fun). You can also mention this behavior to the coaches…some are very adept at mixing things up at practice by playing team games or having different partners in doing strength challenges or whatever. Just be discreet if you decide to talk to the coaches or other parents. I’ve seen the intentions of well-meaning parents totally backfire.

This is age appropriate behavior, it is what it is. They are learning about being with other human beings by acting out all this tween drama. Teach you kid to stay out of it and stay with the girls she likes instead (there will still be plenty of drama ^^). The other ones she should ignore or teach her (and practice with her in role play) some smart phrases to say back to them, if they get annoying ("What do you hope to achieve by saying that to me?" - Answer yadayada - "This doesn't sound interesting", turn around and walk away and the like).
