I am a level 5/6 gymnast in Australia. In level 6, we need to do a flyway, or we start on 9.5 instead of 10.
Flyways have always been a skill that kind of scares me. I have no problem with backsaults or bars in general. The main problem for me is the idea of just chucking the skill for the first time. On other skills, you would work up to it: A cartwheel, then a roundoff, then a roundoff to back, then a roundoff backflip with a spot, then by yourself. For flyways at my gym, we have no drills except for letting go of the bar as if you are going to do a flyway and just landing on your back on a soft crashmat.
Every time I go to do a flyway, I'm doing the swings, ready to let go, and then I just stop. I've managed to do one ever, and it was so long ago I can't remember it. I've had loads of spots with one person on each side of me, and I fully trust the coaches not to drop me. I just get to the flyway part and my brain says no.
I think what I don't like is the huge jump between just going to your back and fully chucking it for the first time. I've easily gone to my back for years, I'm just too worried about going over.
If anyone knows any good flyway drills or has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thankyou so much in advance
