Bean came home from training last night really excited! While she said most of the practice was just kind of average, she was really pumped that she had “rocked†her Beam! She told me about hitting her series again and again, and that her switch split, split jump has been changed to switch split, straddle jump, which she then proceeded to demonstrate multiple times
After the demo was mostly done (she tends to be flipping and turning a lot when we talk gym, lol) she said “coach thinks I’m going to win Beam at Provincials this year!†She then headed off to get ready for bed.
The topic didn’t come up again, andI try to avoid initiating too much gym talk, and leave that ball in her court, but I started wondering about the comment after she went to bed. Do you think a comment like that can create undue pressure in an already pressure filled event, and pressure filled sport, for that matter? Do you think it could cause a bigger sense of disappointment, come Provincials if she feels like she’s failed to meet her coaches expectations? Or am I just overthinking this, and maybe it’s just a wonderful validation of the work she’s put in, and a really great confidence booster?
I’d love some opinions on this. What kind of encouragements do your coaches dole out? Usually I hear things more along the lines of “coach loved the height in my 1.5†or “coach said my body position in my giants is really improvingâ€
