Parents Foot Injury

My DD has been complaining of pain in the top of her foot for a couple of weeks now. It hurts along the line between her big toe and her ankle, and only when there's weight on it. There's a bone there, right over her arch, that on her feet is really prominent, and the one that hurts is swollen. I took her to the orthopedist we saw before, they X-rayed it and saw no break. Basically they didn't know what the problem was so they told to wear her boot until she could walk without pain. It's still not better and she's been doing conditioning at practice (no landings because it hurts), and I need to get her seen by someone. But who? A sports doctor? I don't think our pediatrician would be much help. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

By the way, this injury happened after a meet in which our girls complained about the lack of "give" in the floor the host facility used. All of our level 5 girls were assigned to this floor and ALL of them are now nursing foot/leg injuries.

Xrays do not show stress fractures on the metatarsals very clearly, nor do they show ligament sprains. I would recommend getting a foot MRI by a foot specialist.

My daughter slammed the top of her foot against the beam in a fall, and ended up with a slight sprain in a lisfranc ligament, plus some stress reaction in the midfoot bones, but no fracture. She was booted for 2 weeks and is 100% better now.

We visited a doctor who specializes in sports medicine and this doctor thinks she may have an injury to the sesamoid bones under her big toe. The bump on the top of her foot is apparently a bone spur and should (supposedly) have nothing to do with the pain she's having. I liked this doctor and she spent a good deal of time narrowing down exactly where the pain was worst. Her theory is that one or more of the two sesamoid bones are either bruised or fractured and the treatment is completely opposite depending on which it is. X-ray was inconclusive so yes, we will be having an MRI as soon as they can get us scheduled. Who knew that such small bones could cause so much pain??

I fractured my sesamoid bone several years ago. walked around on it for 3 years before it was diagnosed. Climbed mountains, ran 10Ks, skiied, etc. IT was awful. I spent 2 months in a boot, and it has been great ever since!

That's interesting that the treatment is opposite depending on bruise or fracture. I thought bruises were treated just like fractures except that the recovery time is much quicker. Let me know how it goes! I hope it is just a bruise.

this sounds consistent with what i know on an experience level.
