My daughter got her giants on pit bar yesterday, and everyone was so excited for her. Except two coaches, who she said didn't look very happy for her. She was super confused, she then went to gym the next day and had one of the coaches who didn't look too happy for her yesterday on bars. My daughter has been wanting to do her giants for so long and just couldnt wait to take them to pit bar for the first time. One of my daughters teammates said "Did you see Maddie yesterday, she did her giant." She looked at my daughter and said "I did see that, interesting". My daughter was disappointed and angry. She then had a talk in front of the whole team saying my daughter was not ready for giants, and should have not took it to pit bar, and said it without saying it said the coach who was with her was stupid for letting her do that. My daughter was not happy about her saying that about her coach, she's had her since she started and loves her. It really hurt her feelings. She then got super mad, called me and told me she wanted to go home, I could not come get her due to a schedule issue. She was super upset the rest of practice and the only time she perked up was when they went to rod floor tumble, because she also did her full for the first time mondauy. She then starts to twist, and gets so much power and can't control it that she fulls every time. Her coach was mad at her and saying you can't full, only half today, you don't know where you are. My daughter did another full by accident, and the coach didn't believe her and said I know your doing them on purpose. My daughter got so upset, she asked to sit by her cubbie for the rest of practice. Also I should probably include the reason she said she couldnt do giants was because her kip cast handstands are not consistent enough. So why did you let her do them and get all excited, and then tell her she can't do them. The problem is all the coaches are on different opinions, one coach lets her do this, another coach would say definitely not. And to top it off the coach asked to do highs and lows at the end of the, day. Which they NEVER do, my daughter asked to skip. Her coach said they would talk, during break, but because the coach that helped her do her giant was in the office, it never happened. My daughter didn't want to talk anyway. She was so upset she probably would have slipped up and said something she shouldn't have. Any advice on how to handle this?

I completely understand how confusing this must feel. Your daughter is clearly working very hard - giants are a big skill and show how much she has progressed. Different coaches sometimes have different perspectives: one may be excited to see her push forward, while another is focused on making sure she's consistently safe and ready before competing the skill. My goal as a gymnast to a parent who's daughter is a gymnast, is to keep her safe (although I don't know who she is), build her confidence, and make sure she has strong basic so her skills hold up under pressure in competition. Make sure that the coaching team is on the same page so that your daughter isn't stuck in the middle. If you have any questions, just chat with me.

Thanks,
Princess Andrea.
