Anon Saluting & thanking coaches?

I’m curious, has anyone seen ritual saluting and thanking The coach at a gym west of The Rocky Mountains? It sounds very southern to me.

Only the compulsories at our gym do this.

Yes our gym does this for the optionals team, not sure about other teams since I'm not there at the end of practice.

I had no idea this was such a widespread practice; I've never seen it before, and I've coached at five different gyms in three different states.

Same...I didn't know this was widespread either. Is this a holdover from an imported/foreign born coaching style? It reminds me of a government-sponsored sports program where you are chosen to be an athlete (not so much the high fives but the actual thanking of the coaches).

Do your gyms require height order line up and saluting to your coaches before every event and then doing the same after the event but also thanking them in unison? Just curious because it’s always bern a thing at my gym but some new girls were confused.

Back in the 70’s I trained at an elite training gym. We had to bow to the equipment before we started our routine and bow to the equipment when we were done. I was told that this was a Japanese custom of some support to show respect. We thought it was weird but there were many weird things that went on in that gym!

Japanese gymnasts always bow before and after their performances, and they say something like "Hai" (or so, I've never been able to understand it well).
Now that I've read it carefully, before the event I sometimes line them up to explain the structure of the work out maybe give some kind of thing to pay special attention that day.
Aside from that the line up and clap is just at the end of the practice. And no thank you thing.

My daughter's previous gym in Australia did that - lined up in height order at the end of training. The head coach would talk through any announcements and sometimes would mention if someone got a new skills. Then she'd thank the gymnasts and the gymnasts would thank the coaches then be dismissed. (No saluting).

At my daughter's current gym, each group finishes training at a different time and they stretch down with their coach and usually use that time for the chat. The girls seem to thank their coach spontaneously when they're leaving.

I like the latter better. The former had the advantage of gathering the whole program together (the second gym does team building other ways), but the height thing was a bit unfun. There was always a bit of a feeling of failure among the girls if they had to move up past another girl in the height line.

Every gym my daughter has been in does the line up (by height) and talk at the beginning and end of practice. At the end they all clap and then hug the coaches. I've never been a huge fan of the hug because it is so disingenuous. I'm sure there are practices that every athlete doesn't feel like hugging the coaches but they do because it is what is expected.

My daughter's gym also does a line-up (by height, but it's not strictly enforced) at the end of practice, but not after every event. Then the coach usually talks to them about something, then girls salute and go over to the coach to high-five.

Our team girls line up at the beginning of practice by height, the coach talks to them for a minute, and then they start conditioning. They line up by height again at the end of the night, the coaches give announcements or a pep talk or do any housekeeping that needs to be talked about. Then the girls say "Thank you coaches and parents, good-bye!" and then they clap once. And then they scatter to get their things and go home. It's a tradition they've been doing for years. We have girls who have been to the Ranch, and National Team camp, etc., and it's possible it came from there.

As retired gymnast my gym in Canada we always done it and I never questioned it , we don’t go by height when we line up at end of practice we just stand wherever in line and salute when coach calls your name or everyone also my coach gives feed back about practice sometimes it good and bad or just good …
