My daughter was moved to L7 after our gym had already registered for meets back in August. This week her coach told her that she will have to compete L6 at a meet in January because the meet doesn’t have room for her at L7. However, she already competed as a L7 last month and will compete L7 again this month (both sanctioned meets).

I looked at her meet registrations on the USAG website and she is registered as a L7 for all of this season’s meets except for the one in January that the coach mentioned. Can you switch levels back and forth like this? I’m just curious.

Thank you.

I believe if it's before the declaration date for state meet, it is allowed. She just can't compete at 2 state meets,

Yes she can do this without issues. The only thing I’d be careful of is on vault at level 6 they can’t kiss their feet or it’s a 1 point deduction. Otherwise she should be able to compete her same routines at 6.

Can't she just compete out of session at that L6 meet? She wouldn't be eligible for awards but at least she'd have the consistency in staying in her level. Also, is her coach planning on double checking with the meet organizer in the days leading up to the meet? Seems like there are always kids not able to compete last minute due to injury or illness.

Thanks. Our state’s declaration date is 1/31 and this meet is about two weeks prior to that, so that should work.

Thank you. I will ask her coach about this. It is a travel meet and those levels compete on different days, so a last minute change might be tough on our end.

Our gym actually does this purposely. Our first year L7-10 do 1 meet below them so they have their state score for that level. Then of some reason they don’t get their state score for their level they can do state one level down. Or… even if they have their score for their level, but they aren’t scoring high, they can do a state a level down.

That is....kinda lame.

I didn't think you could do this - I thought after the state declaration day (or whatever it's called, different in each state) you could only compete at state in your current level?

Asking bc my first year L7 daughter is doing L6 for her first meet and her coach said it is because it will be a great confidence builder, she'll score well, etc. She's registered as L7 for the rest of the meets for the season. But now I wonder?!

You are correct that after the state declaration date, you can't compete at a level down from what you have competed past that date.
For example: In Ohio, this season's declaration date for Levels 4-10 is February 17, 2026. The highest level competed AFTER Feb. 17 is the level they will compete at State.

Edited to add: This is per USAG policies.
Once a gymnast has competed in a sanctioned event past the declaration date, she may NOT drop back to a lower DEV level in the same competitive season.
Also, if the gymnast does NOT qualify for State at the higher level, then they will not be able to compete at State that season.
