Those of you without A/C in the gym... does your gym ever close or cancel classes/practice due to excessive heat?

Funny! I almost started the same thread today! My girls' gym has never closed due to the heat...right now it is 99 degrees!

Our gym does not have A/C either and it has never closed due to the heat. It is supposed to be 102-104 today and tomorrow.

However, my dd's old cheer gym closes regularly due to the heat for cheer practices. My friend whose daughter cheers just told me their gym is closed today through Thursday due to the heat.

Not that I have ever seen. They did move team practice to morning for he summer though.

Nope we never do. We also have no AC but we do have fans it helps. We also have morning practice for the Optionals so that helps but i do feel sorry for those with mid day practice.

We usually don't get that hot and humid (for tropical standard) for that long around here. So, 90+ is for a week is a true heat wave. I suppose closing is an option but usually by the time it gets too overbearingly hot and humid, it's already dropped back down to something more reasonable. A return of cool temps in 60s high from last week sounds way too good right now.

Nope they do pace what they do though and make sure they aren't over exerting themselves. They work on one event then off to the area of the gym that has AC (lobby, locker room area) to cool off get drinks etc. Work on 2nd event then back to AC areas to change into bathing suites to go swiming for about 15min to cool off. Back to change into Leo and dry off, Work on 3rd event then 10 min cool off in AC areas. then last event ending with coolpops or popcicles as we take them home.

My DD however is still wearing a hoodie sweat shirt. Her team mates confiscated it yesterday and told her it's way too hot for sweat shirts. She lilkes to have her arms covered. She is very very pale white Irish skin and with the dark hair it looks even paler. Even with a tan she looks like chalk. So she has learned to cover up or burn bad.

Nope - even though we are a tropical island and people figure we must be very hot, it doesn't get any hotter than low 90s here. The humidity is bad, making everyone uncomfortable, but the heat is no danger as long as the kids stay hydrated.

Nope and it gets mighty hot here in the summer, 110s+, though it is a dry heat. NO A/C in the main gym either. They do have a swamp cooler, but it doesn't do much. They have lots of fans and spray bottles and the girls drink lots of water. :)

This year the whole team has morning practices, which has been great for beating the heat. They go back to regular schedule in August though, and we still have 100+ degree weather until end of September usually, so they will still have some hot days.

Cher--LOL! This sounds like my dd!!! Even with her being 1/4 Filipino (I am 1/2 on my dad's side) she has got to be the palest kid!! She has very dark hair as well. She has a lot of German, Russian and Irish blood as well. The kids on her old cheer team used to call her "Casper".

Nope, no cancellations here either! They kids take frequent water breaks and pace themselves, but for the most part it is business as usual. It was about 99 here today though - I don't know how they do it. When I run during the summer months I try to go by 7 in the morning to avoid the heat.

After practice, DD said "I am hot, sweaty, icky, and grumpy."

Yikes....

We never close, but my gym is in a garage, and we open all the garage doors, and have about 10 fans going. We can get water whenever we feel like we need it as well, we don't need to ask a coach.

Cher, you are funny. My dd is so pale. Sometimes in the winter I look at her legs and wonder if she has chalk all over them, but no, that is just how white she is. Even now with what she considers a "tan" she is the whitest one. To make it even worse, her younger sister (3 years younger) gets a beautiful bronze tan and is just about as tall as her.... !!!!!

I don't think my gym has ever closed because of heat. We have a little bit of AC (the gym shares a building and and doesn't always control the AC) but it still gets pretty uncomfortable in there. Feels fine when you walk in, but it doesn't take long for me to start sweating buckets ._. I sweat really bad during the summer...

We have a few fans, but not enough! And sometimes people open the doors with the AC on, thinking it will help, but it doesn't!!

I'm in the same boat, chronically pale. Fortunately I have reddish hair which doesn't make it seem so bad, but I am noticeably the palest person in a room on most occasions. My skin tone doesn't change very much at all from winter to summer, unless a burn is involved. My pale coloration also makes bruises, cuts, and any small skin imperfection very apparent which I am probably most self conscious about.

As far as gyms closing, we were in the 100s yesterday and probably up there again today with tons of humidity and the gym is still open as usual. No AC in the gym, just some garage doors opened a crack and a few fans, but it is sweltering!

My gym has never closed due to heat. However, a couple of days ago the temperature was about 105 degrees in the gym (which is REALLY hot for where I live) so we basically just stopped the class in the middle and did stretches for the rest. Improving flexibility usually doesn't make us sweat, and it will only benefit us in the long run. It was quite relaxing actually considering the gym felt like a brick oven. My best advice to anyone that knows the gym will be extremely hot one day is to take spray bottles, mini fans, 2-3 water bottles, and fruit! Specifically peaches, oranges, and other stuff that can help keep you cool. But honestly, taking one day off here and there won't kill you so the better way to go is to just sit it out. Many might disagree, but exercising in hot weather conditions is not fun, and I highly doubt that anyone is going to actually feel like giving it their all and putting in some effort. Good luck surviving the weather!

It is tough but suck it up.

It is necessary to have big huge fans and those little spray bottles.

Water breaks are good but I prefer letting the kids suck on ice. I give them cups we keep full of ice for water or sucking on. It works a lot better than just the water fountain.

I would not allow popsicles at the end of the workout. I do allow frozen juice cubes. Basically, very similar but only during break and only tried it with OJ so far. I figure it's a bit of carbs, potassium and etc. For rec kids, sure, who cares but typically no junk food post workout unless it's a birthday. Then, what the heck.

Me too. All (I mean ALL) of my friends are those people who go brown in summer after a week of sun. Whereas I never go brown. Not even at the end of summer. I may go red, however, and then instantly back to white  In all the photos with them, people always comment like "OMG you're so white!" and I'm like, yeah thanks... I KNOW.

So I tend to cover my arms pretty much constantly too, like your DD, Cher. At least we can know we are not alone in this dilemma! :)

No never no matter what the weather. We live in a very hot climate but its very rare for a gym to have air conditioning due to the size of the buildings and the way things are built here it would be so expensive to air condition. Because of the hot climate most buildings are very open so you just couldn't air condition them.

Our gym has never closed, and boy it is hot in the summer. A bit metal garage without the big doors. The humidity in Quebec is ridiculous, just sitting on the deck with Baby Bog at 7am to watch her swim and I was dripping!

The coaches are very smart about keeping the kids hydrated and they pace them carefully. If we closed due to heat and humidity there would be no gym for three months!!!
