A friend mentioned that she believed all the years of breathing in chalk particles while doing bars is probably harmful for the lungs, and at first I brushed her off, but I'm beginning to wonder if there may be any validity to her concern.

According to the Material Safety Data Sheet for Magnesium carbonate:
Potential Health Effects
Eye: Dust may cause mechanical irritation.
Skin: May cause skin irritation. Low hazard for usual industrial handling.
Ingestion: No hazard expected in normal industrial use. Used as antacid.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation.
Chronic: Chronic, long-term exposure to dust may lead to "benign pneumoconiosis," a disease of the lungs caused by long-continued inhalation of especially mineral or metallic dust.
