Hi! My dd is 8y, L2, and has been in gymnastics for just over 2 years. I was actually wondering what the norm is for moving through the levels. Maybe there is no "norm" as each child is different. I have spoken to the gym and we are actually having a meeting next week to discuss this very same thing (was told she is moving up, to L3?). I only want to be sure we are doing what is right for my dd. She has been to several meets this year, incl. the State L2 meet, and does fairly well. I have been told not to worry greatly about scores at the compulsory level. Not being a gymnast myself, is this true? I don't know if this advice is correct......any thoughts?

Looking forward to being on this site, I have looked through some posts and gotten alot of information!!!! :)

Hi and welcome to CB. I don't think I will be good at answering your question, but wanted to welcome you. I am still fairly new also my DD is 9 and competing L4.

I think the score thing is that someone who scores high in compulsories may not do well in optionals and someone who maybe did mediocre in compulsory may be awesome in optionals.

What I try to focus on with my gymmie is:
- is she having fun ( most important)
- is she improving / progressing
- is she consistent @ meets with gradual improvement in scores

You're right about each child being different. It also depends on the policies of your gym. Our gym doesn't have level 2. Level 3 is actually a developmental/invitation only team. Girls are typically moved up depending on their skill level. And, most girls tend to start younger. My dd was competing level 4 at age 6. Now she's an 8yo level 6.

Is she enjoying it? Is it challenging enough for her? What skills does she have? The answer to these questions may determine how quickly she moves up. Give her time to perfect these skills and she'll progress to the upper levels in time. I wish her luck!

And welcome to you! This is a great place for advice, to vent or get any question answered that you might have. Come back often! :)

Ok, thanks I feel a little better. So far, that is consistent with what I have heard. Our gym's owner told me that her own daughter was not so great in compulsories, but scores far better now in optionals. I guess we will see how it goes. My dd loves gymnastics and is forever doing cartwheels, handstands, etc. in the house. I couldn't stop her if I tried.....LOL!

Welcome!! As everyone has said, every kid will move through the levels at their own pace. Some will fly through them, some will repeat the same one. :) As long as they are happy and progressing, doing well at meets and improving, that is what counts! We have all kinds of kids on the CB. Join in and you will meet some great people and learn lots, too. :)
