Hey, parents. My 7 year old has suddenly started getting nasty rips. She hasn’t had any in probably a year or more and now she’s had 2 bad ones in the last couple weeks. I can see on her palms where she is about to get another couple too. How can I help her hands? Is there a way to help these rips heal faster and prevent future rips? She’s in the gym 12 hours a week and not getting much of a break for them to heal.

Tape grips can help before they get grips, but I would talk to her coaches and see if they think that's a good idea. Otherwise I would say Vaseline/Aquaphor or Rip Fix or anything else you can find for fixing rips that works well for her - might take some experimentation, in fingerless gloves or you can just use socks. The bonus with getting gloves is you can tape popsicles sticks to the middle finger overnight to keep the palms open. This process helps to keep the rips moist to foster healing, while keeping them covered to prevent whatever you are using from getting everywhere. Basically don't let them dry out. Don't clip the skin off if you can avoid it until it completely dries out. This will also aid in keeping them moist. What level is she? 7 is a little young for grips but if she already has a kip and is doing clearhips or giants it could be time to consider them.

Thank you for the advice! She’s working on a consistent kip so she can compete level 4 this coming season. It’s the only thing holding her back and that is where she is getting rips. I wasn’t at practice but the coach said she was trying so hard and so many times on the kip and that’s when she ripped. I think the plan as of now is to get grips in this next year once her kip is strong. I think I might talk to her coach about tape grips in the meantime though.
