Hello. My dd has a meet tomorrow afternoon. She was doing her floor routine in the living room, and was about to do a move for the routine and she said "OUCH!". So imagine my facial expression when I hear this :( I asked her what's wrong and she says "my back hurts". Great! Why didn't she tell me this sooner? I have no idea what to do to fix this in less that twenty four hours. I am going to ice it, maybe for an hour. Then let her soak in Epson salt for half an hour. Then some Bengay. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas? Please help!

Deep heat, gentle stretching, a long hot bath, maybe massage if it is definitely muscular.

How old is she? Can she take a painkiller? If it were me, I would probably suck it up and take some paracetamol (and do the above) and compete. But if she isn't old enough to make that kind of decision then I would try some of the stuff I suggested, take it easy, and see how she feels in the morning. It won't be the end of the world if she misses the comp to save her spine.

Deep heat as in a heating pad? And ok to the stretching and long hot bath. I think it's muscular. I was praying it wasn't lower back. It's mid range.

She's 9, so she can't do a pain killer. Well I can give her some liquid Motrin. Will that help? I've been telling her to sit still since she told me it hurts, but she keeps moving. She said it only hurts when she jumps (floor routine stuff). It doesn't bother her when she does vault or bars.

I would get a check up just to be safe, backs are never worth risking

I am definitely going to this, but call the doctor's office Monday morning. I was seeking a temporary fix though. She has a meet tomorrow.

Eek, that's not what you want to hear. What concerns me is that it hurts when she jumps. That's more of a jolt than a stretching movement. Also how long has it been hurting for and what was she doing when she did it/felt it?

Personally if it were my dd I would ice it and give her an anti-inflammatory, warm bath before bed and then see how she feels in the morning. If it seems ok and it's not bothering her then I'd take her along but let the coach know.

I'm guessing from what I've learned about the US system that you will have other meets coming up, so don't take any chances if she is still hurting tomorrow. There isn't a quick fix, just ways to ease and/or mask symptoms whilst potentially making it worse underneath.

Good luck

I would get her cleared Before the meet. My DD had a national meet, representing the county and twisted her ankle in gym. I got it checked before she competed (Luckily it was just a light sprain and the doc taped it up) and if the injury had been more severe she would not have competed. There will be other meets.

Definitely not what I want to hear. I was humming the notes to her floor routine and she started doing it. Which is when I discovered the back pain. So had I never done it, I wouldn't have known. She's been in pain since Tuesday. She said the pain started when she did a flyaway timer. I have no idea what that is.

I had her soak in a hot bath (put some Epson Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar in it) for about an hour. She said it helped. Someone suggested a heat pad and anti-inflammatory, too. I am going to do both, and ice it. Maybe ice it first, then heat pad and anti-inflammatory before bed. But yes, I'm going to do all of these, and see how she's feeling in the am. I called Urgent Care by my house, and they're open 24 hours.

Thanks!

Oh wow! Well that's good it wasn't too serious. I let her soak in a warm/hot bath w/ Epson Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar. She said it eased the pain. I'm going to ice it in a lil bit. And then a heating pad and anti-inflammatory before bed. I'll see what she's feeling like in the am. Urgent care is open 24-7.

I would get it checked out tonight before the meet. Can you call her coach? I've seen the flyaway timers - they basically land on their backs on a mat. I'm sure that could cause some pain - especially back or neck pain. Hugs to both of you!

I don't have the coach's number. I did, however, contact the team mom to see if she has any other way for me to contact him. I emailed our Booster Club too.

She demonstrated what a flyaway timer is, somewhat. I've seen her do this a few times before in practice and it never bothered her. My guess is she rolled over the wrong way. And maybe pulled something. And she can do everything else w/ no problems. This sucks! :(

And thanks for the hugs! :)

It would be disappointing if she can't compete but it wouldn't have to end her fun experience...last season my daughter woke up the morning of a meet and was unable to move her neck. Not as a result of an injury just one of those fluky things. She couldn't compete, but did get dressed and hang with her team. She got to assist her coach by keeping track of scores, and cheer her team mates on. She had a BLAST.

Bummer! And yeah if she doesn't compete, she'll still be there representing the team. And that's cool she kept track of the scores. I'm hoping for the best. It's really hard for her to sit still. But I told her she needs to rest and use all that energy for tomorrow (hoping she's good in the am).

But I went and bought a heating pad and some Motrin. I'm gonna put that heat on that back before she goes to bed. And give her the Motrin before she knocks out, too.

What level is she in? If level 3 or 4 I would say just compete on bars and beam. You'll need to monitor for more time than you have before the meet. Urgent care won't be able to do much unless she has a broken bone visible on the x ray which isn't likely. You'll need a specialist for anything else. Level 5 or up probably should not compete anything at all.

She is Xcel Silver. I was thinking bars and beam too. But she said she's fine on Vault. If she's good in the am, I'm gonna have her coach take a look and see what he thinks.

And thank you for telling me that. They would've have me come there and told me nothing. And would've been happy to send me that bill in the mail
