I would say that it really depends how old you are and what level you are. My daughter is 7, level 1, and we do have a bar, raised beam (18" off floor), and a 2"x4'x10' mat. Since my daughter joined team later in the season than other girls, she really needed to catch up. The equipment helped a lot, especially balance on the beam, basic bar moves, etc. The mat is primary used under the bar, she prefers to do her floor routine and stretching on our giant rug. Like somebody else said, bars are pretty useless and unsafe after a certain level. All equipment needs to be used with careful adult supervision at all times. I would say that instead, you should utilize your gym's "open gym" time as much as possible. Our gym charges $7 for 1.5 hours every Friday, and they only have about 20 kids attending, and 3-4 coaches available, who might even help you with certain skills. Fun and safe at open gym.
