We moved to an out of town gym last May and it has been successful. I pick her up from school and another girl and take them both each day. The other Mom brings home. I keep a lap desk in the car and homework has not been a problem. Reading especially works because there are no distractions. If she does not have homework, she knows she needs to sit quietly and text or read so the other girl can work. I bring a sandwich or bagel and drink so she has something to eat right away and then she gets to work.
The hardest part is her getting home at 9 or later. She still has to shower and finish up any homework. Usually the other parent has food for them on the way home and we make sure DD has $ for it. But they never accept. We do the same thing on the occasion we do a round trip so it all evens out. Good luck!
