It's very variable. All our kids start in rec classes, in their appropriate age group (unless they are transferring from another gym, at which point they just get evaluated separately and put on team/in rec). The gymnasts with the best potential, mostly the ones who are strong and a combination of fearless/flexible/well-coordinated etc. are watched for a couple of weeks. When they HC feels they're ready, they do a quick evaluation, usually as a group activity, so the one kid doesn't feel singled out. Sometimes it is immediately clear that a gymnast could be good on the developmental team, and sometimes the gymnast will improve and then be ready. It's usually within a year, but sometimes older gymnasts who have been in rec for a few years will also be invited to give the dev group a try. Most of the gymnasts who join the team are between 6 and 8 years old.

DD Started gym when she was 10 and did rec for 6 months. But when she got into team she started in Xcel Gold (She is a Level 5 on all events ^^)

My team invite was extremely rare. At my gym, we have an invitation only team and it’s the only gymnastics gym in my area so it’s super popular. Typically kids are invited from rec classes at about 7 or 8 years old into pre team or level 1. But I was invited yesterday at 14 years old( on my birthday) to Xcel Silver. It’s because, I had been taking rec classes there for about a year, and had already done tumbling classes at a different gym for about 5 years. And the team coach was running rec summer camp and she saw I had team potential and evaluated my skills for silver and invited me. I’m competing for my first time on silver for 2024-25 season.
