How many "aches and pains" are normal?

I know how she feels about flip flops! Though I can't give advice other than what as been said, if she insists on sandals They do make some with more support now perhaps that will be worrth asking the ortho about

My girls wear birkenstocks, they are pretty cool now and they are basically orthotics. Flat flip flops are just so hard on their bodies.

It is hard when they start to grow as not everything grows at the same rate, bones can lengthen way before muscles and tendons and that can cause pain as well.

A check up with the doc is never a bad thing, it always puts your mind at rest too!

Well, I have forbidden flip flops (and these are the real flip flops!) unless going to to the pool. Otherwise sneakers. I think DD has seen the light on this. We have looked for good sandals but she is VERY picky about what they look like so I won't buy things she won't wear.

The last few days have been pretty good. DD is icing well a couple of times a day and taking ibuprofen. She modified the last couple of days and today was a TOPs workout so no tumbling. Still keeping an eye on it, but so far it does not seem to be serious.

Thanks for all the replies!

have you tried the water shoes instead of flip flops for the beach? The more expensive ones have some arch support at least in them. That is the closest to a flip flop that I will allow DD to wear and like you only at the beach, pool etc. Not for just hanging out.

Oh we also purchase socks with support too. Usually you get them in sporting goods stores. and they are tighter around the arch and heal areas to give a little more support. Usually they are in the running, hiking area. My DD actually loves these she abducted them from my Sons sock draw when he outgrew his.

My daughter had a nagging ankle injury last summer. We went to a well regarded sports medicine ortho in NYC twice. She had an MRI, and he recommended icing and ibuprophen and modified workouts. A few weeks later she couldn't walk. We went back to ortho, and he put her in a boot, and prescibed physical therapy. No improvement was made. We went to a different doctor, her referred us to a third, who specializes in treating professional ballet dancers. He did and ultrasound, and found a tiny cyst on her ankle. By this time the cyst was subsiding, and if neccessary she'll have it drained. It felt great to find a doctor who paid close attention and wanted to keep looking until her found the correct answer.

I'm posting this to say that sometimes one orthopedist isn't enough, even the best regarded. Make sure that the doc understands and respects gymnastics, not just baseball and football playing boys. I think the first fancy doc we went to blew her off because she was a little girl and the MRI gave no obvious answers.

JDF -
You make a very valid point. I was talking to my brother, an athletic trainer that has worked with just about every level of athlete out there from pro down to school ages, about this very issue.

We have a huge sports-ortho practice in town that is very well respected and nationally recognized. They're great with the "big" sports - basketball, football, hockey, soccer, baseball, track. But the lesser known sports (that then produce the lesser known injuries)? They're not so great. They know what they know very well, but they're not always willing to look beyond that core set of knowledge/injury.

Hi All,

Thought I would keep you all informed of DDs situation. It seemed last week like the icing and ibuprofen was providing some improvement, along with modifying workouts as she was not pounding on her feet.

Well, now the ball of her one foot (she claims the other does feel a little better) hurts to walk on or if pressed - sort of like a bruise. She thinks it is because she hit her foot on the bar when falling off doing her squat on. I was not there to see this, but I can't picture how this would happen.

Anyway, she is very worried about needing time off and missing team camp, which she is scheduled for next week Mon-Wed. While I had been hoping that the break she will get when we leave next Thursday for a week and half of vacation would do the trick, I just feel uneasy. I spoke to the head coach/owner again when I dropped her off for practice today. We agreed she is to do no running, vault, tumbling, tramp, or otherwise pounding on her feet. Bars, conditioning and handstands or walkover (maybe things like cartwheels on beam), but that is it.

I called my orthopedic who did my surgery and DD has an appointment tomorrow morning at 8. I just want to be sure it isn't a stress fracture. Coach, DD and I all know what doc is going to say - stay off it for several weeks, but I will let you all know the outcome tomorrow.

Keep your fingers crossed that it is nothing major!!
