My gym rarely uses drills, pretty much never. Is that normal? What are the benefits of doing drills?

Depends on what you mean by drills. Do you consider leadup skills to be drills?

Once you get past the basics, most of the "drills" I use are skills in and of themselves, done with a very specific focus. For example, if I'm teaching a kid a full-twisting double back on floor, I'll spend a lot of time on backhandsprings, double backs, cruises (on trampoline), half-outs (on trampoline), and half-ins to backdrop (on trampoline) -- all of which are skills in and of themselves.

We do a lot of drill work. My group is still low level (about level 3-4/Gold in US, but different country and system).
Drills help you focus on a part of a skill in an easier or more controlled situation so you're able to learn the right movement/position/technique, that sometimes would be hard to do when doing the skill as a whole and could lead to having the go back and correct it later on.
