On this post I will explain the first day in my childhood I instantly got a love for being upside down! I know that I have already talked about this day a few times before but this day I remember so fondly and it brings me happy tears thinking back on this childhood memory and it was one of my most treasured days of my childhood cause it is what started my love of hanging upside down that I have had for 30 years now! In a matter of just one Physical Education lesson I became totally obsessed with hanging upside down out of just one PE lesson it all started here! First we have to start a week prior!
I was 8 years old at the time in the year 1993 and it was our second or maybe third week doing gymnastics and until then we only did basic forward rolls! This week we had to do handstands and cartwheels on the gymnastics mats and honestly I never did a handstand before this and a few of the kids got scolded for trying to grab other kids legs to help them! At the end of class the teacher said "there is a way to help each other so next week we will all be doing partner handstands" and I felt nervous about this so I asked my teacher if we are definitely doing partner handstand next week and she said "yes" so I felt a mix of excitement and fear cause I was nervous similar to standing in a long queue of a big roller coaster ride in a theme park!
The next week after taking off our shoes and socks so we was bare feet our teacher called us 8 year old children to sit in a circle around her as she stood on a gymnastics mat! Then to my surprise my teacher said "can I have Lucy please?" and my stomach immediately felt very weird like the butterflies in my tummy were in knots! I was almost crying cause my tummy tickled sooo much and I felt a little scared! So my teacher said "Lucy please do a nice handstand for me" so with me all nervous with my stomach in a ticklish knot I tried to kick up to a handstand and my teacher grabbed my legs with both of her hands and she held me in a handstand!
Immediately as my teacher took hold of both of my legs as I did a handstand my stomach tickled even more sharply for a few seconds! It felt like how your stomach tickles on a steep drop on a roller coaster and then I basically had constant butterflies in my tummy during the duration I was in a handstand which sort of felt all warm and fuzzy in a way! My teacher held me in a handstand for at least two minutes and she basically had a long in depth conversation with the other children while I was stuck on my hands in a handstand! She just literally held my legs while talking to the other children who were sat in a circle around me and I was trapped in a handstand held by my teacher for a couple of minutes!
While stuck helpless in a handstand I was held safely by my teacher holding my legs and I occasionally spent time looking either at my hands on the floor and at the inverted view by tucking my head in but I mostly looked at the inverted view of my school friends sitting in a circle around me all in their bare feet who basically looked to me like they were sat on the ceiling and the perspective was sooo magical almost like an alternate world where my school friends were sat on the ceiling!
My stomach was in a constant ticklish knot with the butterflies tickling my tummy as my teacher talked to the other children while I was stuck in a handstand saying "so I want you all to work together in teams of two and one child does a nice tall straight handstand and the other child holds your legs as I am doing with Lucy! Please remember we want nice pointed toes and head tucked in and a nice tall handstand shape" then my teacher while still holding me in a handstand gently asked me "Lucy you okay sweetie?" and I said "yeah" but I maybe sounded a little scared and my teacher gently said in an encouraging gentle voice "it is alright, I got you" And then I said while stuck in a handstand "Miss I'm upside down" and she responded with "that is right your going upside down which is a great skill in gymnastics" and then while still holding me in a handstand at almost a minute by now she said "you can even lift your partner up" and she suddenly lifted me off the ground holding me upside down in the air for around 5 seconds which made my stomach tickle sharply again and the whole class of children burst out laughing! She lifted me so high in the air holding upside down by my legs above her head for around 5 seconds before putting me back into a handstand again as all my precious school friends laughed and giggled!
All my school friends was laughing at the fact my teacher while holding me in a handstand lifted me upside down in the air for a few seconds as a joke and I blushed and my face turned red and my stomach tickled and had sooo much butterflies! Then my teacher put me back into a handstand again as the whole class laughed! After that my teacher said "now do not let go cause if you do the gymnast may panic and topple like this" and she let go of me and don't forget I was doing almost no work here as my teacher held my legs in a handstand and all I had to do was keep my hands on the ground so suddenly I almost toppled over and I let out a slight "yelp" and my tummy tickled sharply again and I almost flipped/toppled over until my teacher very quickly took hold of my legs again and then she said "You see how Lucy lost her balance then when I let go of her? So it is important to keep hold of your friend in a handstand taking in turns and this is how you bring the gymnast down safely" and then my teacher put me back down showing the other kids how to bring each other down safely!
My teacher held me in a handstand for sooo long and just kept talking and talking to the other children while I was stuck helpless in a handstand! Immediately after getting put down from a handstand I felt super hyper and energetic and I remember thinking to myself "lets do that again" and I was thinking to myself "I wanna do that again" and I remember doing a few cartwheels and dancing for joy at that exact moment as well!
After school that day and all the rest of the day in school too I just wanted to recapure the feeling I had when I was stuck upside down in a handstand! After school I asked my mom why my stomach tickled sooo much when I was in a handstand and my mom said it might be because I am too skinny! My mom then took me to our local playground and for the first time ever I hung upside down on the monkey bars and I immediately got butterflies in my stomach again! I hung my arms below my head and dangled my arms as I hung upside down with a ticklish tummy and I fell totally in love with being hung upside down from that day forward!
I get super excited when I see characters in movies or cartoons hanging upside down so I have the urge to rewind the upside down scene over and over again! I also love looking at YouTube videos where others hang upside down or do gymnastics especially on the bars!
Most people say they feel the blood rush to their head but honestly I feel a flip flop ticklish feeling in my stomach more when I am upside down or have done flips in gymnastics! My belly has always been extremely sensitive and the sensation in my stomach on roller coasters or swinging back and forth on a swing or driving fast down a hill in a car or going down a slide at the playground or any gymnastics move that involves being upside down such as halfway though flips or handstands or especially when hanging upside down makes my stomach tickle slightly everytime!
People on the autism spectrum can have sensory issues and I think one of my sensory issues is I get butterflies in my tummy very easily and I LOVE the feeling of butterflies in my tummy cause it feels all warm and fuzzy and cosy inside like a blanket of gentle safe fear! My tummy has a butterfly farm for sure! I LOVE hanging upside down soooo much and after that one day I begged my mom for my own gymnastics bar which I got for my birthday and I would hang upside down practically every single day and that continues to this very day! Hanging upside down is one of my two autistic special interests and my lifelong love of hanging upside down all started with a long partner handstand in a PE lesson!
