WAG Hurdle Step Technique

What is the best technique to use during hurdle step for optimum round offs. I've seen videos with several different hand placement etc
 
As far as hand placement goes, I learned to do it with fingers both facing the same direction like doing a cartwheel on balance beam.
However I later had a coach who wanted T-shaped hands where the first hand faces out like above, but the second one turns in to face the first (making a T, but hands not together). I never quite got this down since it was introduced quite late and never really worked on.
