If a gymnast has competed level 5 already, then went on to compete a few meets at 6, can they compete level 5 this season?

I saw where one girl is doing this and I didn’t think it was allowed???

Yes it’s allowed. You can drop back before the declaration date (in many areas this is the state meet) or an injury petition allows it as well.

Thanks. I looked it up at USAG, and I guess mobility is allowed between levels 5 and 6, but I guess it surprised me that they would WANT to go back to level 5 for this fall season when they did 5/6 last season.

Every gym has their own way of doing things, I guess.

Do you know this girl? There could be many reasons for dropping back a level even if she did well as a 6 last season.

Going from compulsory to optional. Could be lots of reasons but if she didn't do level 6 State then it's fine. Doesn't your gym ever have a girl repeat a level- for whatever the reason? Same thing.

Unless this girl is your kid, it's best not to speculate.

Wondering if you and the OP are discussing a girl that you really know or someone you've just seen at a meet or somewhere. I don't mean to sound rude but if it's someone that you don't know, there can be SO many reasons that this could happen.

There may be people out there that said the same thing about my dd. She missed 4 months of practice over a period of 13 months because of injuries. Not everyone knows this or understands what it did to her confidence.

I realize that sandbagging happens but there are definitely cases where it it completely justified.

I completely understand that and respect it. And for those who have fears and blocks or injuries I get it also. But when this is not the case, and the girl is healthy and fine, no outside factors like moving to new gym, divorce, injury, bullying, etc, yes it can be a bit of a head scratcher. And having conversed with the OP before on things, I am pretty sure she wouldn’t be criticizing anyone (nor am I), it’s just puzzling. But of course, everyone has their own reasons why they do what they do.

DD got 2nd AA at state, 1st on vault her age 11 level 8 season. and the summer after got injured and has had surgeries and injuries ever since. She has had one 3 month period in a year and a half that she could fully train. She repeated last year as a 12 year old with one event at state. She got dead last, but it was a watered down routine just so she could be out there with the team. She is doing level 8 again as a 13 year old. I am hoping and praying she will be well enough to do 4 events. People she competed with and beat as an 11 year were level 9 last year and some i am sure will be 10s this year. Someone could look at her results from a year and half ago and judge why she is still a level 8. There's a reason behind every level story, and usually if it is a lower level than is expected, it is a disappointed kid involved.

Yes it’s allowed. Level 6 is not a mandatory level.

It’s 4,5 and 7. So as long as they haven’t done 7, 5 or 6 doesn’t matter. It’s a gym/gymnast decision.

6 not being mandatory doesn’t actually have anything to do with it being OK to drop back if that’s what you’re trying to say.

And even though it’s not mandatory, if you do decide to compete it then there is a minimum mobility score to move to 7. (Just a fun fact.)

As long as they get a score of 32 in level 5 they can move to level 7, L6 doesn’t matter. The statement 32 at 5 or 6 is fuzzy, because 5 is a required level so to move they need a 32 in 5, making L6 scores mostly irrelevant, in terms of mobility

5	Reached 7th birthday	34.00 AA at Level 4	Level 5 or 6*	32.00 AA at Level 5 or old level 4. Mobility back and forth between Levels 5 & 6 is allowed
6	Reached 7th birthday	32.00 AA at Level 5	Level 6 or 7*	32.00 AA at Level 6 Level 6 may be skipped if a 32.00 AA was achieved at Level 5
7	Reached 7th birthday	32.00 AA at Level 5 or 6	Level 7 or 8*	32.00 AA at Level 7 Ind. Event Specialist: 8.5 per event

Yes, they can move back if they have done 7 as long as it’s before the declaration date.

We had a girl on our team last year that went to Level 9. Competed one or two meets and dropped back to 8. Something was just "off", she was miserable and coach and parents thought it would be best for her long term to take the pressure off. Obviously this was before any declaration time. Come to find out, she had bulging discs in her back but this wasn't discovered for a few months. Her parents and coach felt terrible but her symptoms (and her vocalizing them) were so wishy washy, they had no idea.

There’s no mobility score from 6 to 7; you can score a 32.00 AA in level 5 or 6 to compete 7.
