is it common for gymnasts from level five to ten to train together at practices? is it a bad idea to have all the compulsory and optional girls train together?

Daughters gym practices together and they get along great. They breakup into their groups but a lot of times they have contests together where all the groups practice together and they often condition together. The older girls are great role models for the younger ones. The team has a really close bond which is really nice.

Happens at DD's gym and she thrives on it :) Used to happen at DS's gym and no longer does, he misses it now.

Doesn't happen much at our gym. They might warm up together but then each level goes and trains separately. We really have too many girls to do otherwise.

well, i think that whilst it is good to have some training together it is not always ideal as even in our squad which ranges from lvl 3 - lvl 6 our coach finds it difficult to do what is best for all particularly when she is the only coach and we can't split it. This is particularly difficult when we need to vault as the level 3s just use a stack of mats and level 4s use vaulting table and a stack of mats and level 5s just handspring so if we have a mixed group like that our training is often affected. It is also a problem on floor when the level 5s and 6s need the diagonal to tumble and the level 3s are just doing routines

At DD's gym, they all warm up together then split up among the 4 coaches. The compulsory girls love it because they get to see the optional girls practice the harder skills.

For the most part everyone warms up together (except on days there are to many girls, then the optionals warm-up separately). Then we break up into specific groups depending on skill level, named by colors (I'm in Gold Group which is levels 8/9-10).

Personally I think this is a bad idea because each gymnast gets less turns and less time with the coach because the coach has to focus on the younger gymnasts and pay attention to everyone for that matter! Plus, higher level gymnasts will not always get chances to work on the skills they need.

No i wouldnt say this is a regular thing, in my opinion. We normaly all warm up together and then split up depending on level. most of the time there is 2 compulsary groups on 2 events and 2 optional groups on 2 events then my little group on event(1 of the events is conditioning) like camsewind said it would be hard for everyone to get the attention they need. it is definetly doable but it would need to be really structured.

In Australia it is very common. Most gyms around here have larger teams for level 1-4, but much smaller teams fro level 5-10. We often start to lose them in the transition from level 4-5 when it gets harder so many gyms must combine their 5-10 teams in order to have a team.

How well it works depends entirely on the coach. With a good coach it works really, really well. The lower level gymnasts can look up to the higher level gymnasts for inspiration and to see how the skills are done properly. Higher level gymnasts feel the pressure to stay on top of their game as they watch the lower ones coming through the ranks and get a chance to develop leadership skills themselves.

This happens at my gym very rarely. Not only do the older/higher level girls have bigger bar and vault settings, but the younger gymnasts need more attention to make sure they stay on track. Sometimes on days where not as many people come they warm up together, but once they go to events they usually split up. In level 8 I've only been with level 4's and 5's once and that was because I was the only optional there!

Our whole team practices together level 4-10. They warm up together and then each level has their own coaches and rotation and then at the end of practice they come back and condition together. My dd loves it, she gets to know the older girls, looks up to them. Also they uptrain with upper levels, my dd training level 5 has her cartwheel on the beam so last week she moved to the 6 group and worked on bwo on the beam. Works great for her!

In our gym the level 5 and above work together but break into level groups on events. I know it helps my daughter since she sees more skills and the fear factor of doing the skill lessens when she sees that its not as scary as it sounds.

How it works at my gym probably very different to most gyms.

We have pre levels, levels (1-2), State Stream Squad (lvl 3 prep - 6), National Development Squad (level 3 - lvl 6 and 2 IDP level 3s), IDP Squad, and then boys which i know nothing about.

We all train separately, different hours, different coaches, different warm ups different conditioning etc we have about 20ish girls in our squad (state stream) but on lvl 5 and 6 days there are only 8 of us (we have a few advanced level 4s) and then days we combine with level 3s we have about 13 of us it all depends
