Dear Members of the Gymnastics Community,
We are heartbroken to share that Jim Hartung passed away last night, January 10th. Around 8:22 pm James Nicholas Hartung passed away from a massive heart attack. He was at his home with this oldest son Jimmy watching his favorite NFL team, the Green Bay Packers.
Jim was a fixture in the gymnastics world and meant so much to so many people across our community. He was more than a coach. He was a mentor, a leader, a storyteller, and someone who genuinely cared about the people around him. Jim had a special way of connecting with others, whether through his quick wit, his sense of humor, or his ability to make people feel seen and valued wherever he went.
In true Jim fashion, he was in the gym on Friday doing what he loved most, coaching, teaching, and spending time with the current generation of gymnasts. That dedication to the sport and to the people in it defined who Jim was. He loved gymnastics, he loved sharing his knowledge, and most of all, he loved the relationships that came with it.
Across programs, generations, and levels of the sport, so many carry lessons, laughs, and lasting memories that trace back to Jim. His influence will continue to live on through the athletes he coached, the coaches he impacted, and the culture of care, passion, and connection he helped foster throughout the gymnastics community.
Throughout this NCAA season, we will look for meaningful ways to honor and remember Jim, celebrating the legacy he leaves within our sport.
Information regarding funeral services and ways to honor Jim’s life will be shared with the gymnastics community as it becomes available.
Our thoughts are with Jim’s family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit, humor, and love for gymnastics will never be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Chuck and John
