Just a tip I learned on a sewing forum for applique work

Stick the applique with 3M Scotch Permanent Glue Stick, wait for it to dry (about and hour) and then sew.

Works really well and no gunky needles.

Glue sticks are a great tip for appliqués. I usually use stabilizers without anything else, I like to live dangerously, lol! If I do use fixers, I like spray on adhesives more than glue sticks, because they're fast and I have no patience. :) I don't use them enough to gum up the needles, I do see what they do over time on my embroidery hoops so I use them judiciously.
