If you check out how much judges get paid you can easily see they are not doing it for the money. I know a few judges, they all love gym and seeing the kids do well, they are sad for the ones that struggle. They also get to know our girls, we only have a few in our region so we see the same faces year after year. Our head coach, who is now a judge too, often sees judges who were at her meets as a National level gymnasts, very cool small world.
Judges can and do make mistakes, but they are not out to make girls sad. I firmly believe that the gymnasts should learn to evaluate whether they did a good routine or not regard;less of the score.
I joke with my DD sometimes that she be happy if she fell off the beam and got the gold medal (did happen twice) rather than doing a perfect routine and coming 12th (often happens), just can't be the best all the time.
