TumbleGirl

I have been doing gymnastics off and on all my life but never really got far before i stopped again. I recently decided to try tumbling and now i am planning to stay with it. I took a semester of tumbling at a dance studio and before long i had got my standing backhandspring.. and this studio only had thin mats.. no tumbltrak or springfloor. I wanted to do more tumbling so I signed up for a tumbling class at an actual gym, but when i got to my first class, all we did was hard conditioning. We didn't learn anything.. we just conditioned the whole time and no gymnastics. Of course I knew we were going to do SOME conditioning but i also expected to tumble too! My coach said we will be conditioning for the most part the whole time, every class. I understand conditioning is a big part of gymnastics and i dont mind doing it cause i know it will make me a better tumbler.. but this isnt exactly what I expected. Is this normal? What was it like when you started gymnastics/tumbling at a late age?

I took a tumbling class outside of my regular cheer practices (we also have a weekly tumble only practice) But we usually condition during regular cheer practice. Tumble class was only for tumbling. we did like a 10 minute stretch/warmup. My coaches expected the girls to stretch prior to the class because the class was only an hour long, so we would spend as much time tumbling. if you want to focus on tumbling, try going to an open gym, or getting a private lesson with a coach. Conditioning is important, but it shouldn't be the main focus of a tumble class, it's a tumble class not a condition class. :) I hope this helped.

That is definitely not normal. It's a special tumble class, you should be tumbling! I would switch classes if I were you

I just signed my daughter up for a tumbling class and it's strictly tumbling. They worked on her standing backhandspring, and roundoff backhandspring the whole class. Let's just say she was tired afterwards. I do understand the conditioning but if it's a tumbling class then you should be doing some tumbling.

If it's the first few classes, they might do this to prepare you for tumbling. At my gym lot of kids come in with 0 strength anywhere, (seriously, they can't even do pushups in some classes) and then expect to be able to do everything. The coaches try to give them conditioning at the end of class, but kids have a tendency to drop out if it gets "too hard" and we have to be able to compete with the bigger gym in the area.

Keep going for another couple of weeks, and if they don't slow down, find another class.
