(((hugs))) to you & your DD!!! I can tell you love her deeply & want her to be happy!!! What a wonderful mom you are!!! Thank you for sharing your DD story with us. We learn so much when open up to each other. Your DD's early childhood experiences are a part of her, so I do feel they do need to be taken into consideration. But I don't feel they have to define who she is for the rest of her life. Your older DD is very wise!!!
If your younger DD is not having issues in anyother situations, maybe this gym situation is pushing her in ways she's never been pushed before & she is just unsure of how to deal with it. Her avoidance is confusion on her part. Not knowing how to process the situation is leading her to "shut down". Gymnastics is a mental & physical sport it does push them in ways that most other daily life situations don't. Some gymnast need a more supportive/nurturing envioronment then others. All gym programs, coaches are not the same just as all gymnast are not the same.
Everyone is bringing their own individual self & experiences to the sport & sometimes things just don't mesh well together. I'm glad you explained your DD's situation to the coaches. Now maybe they can look at her with more compassion instead of as the 'difficult' one. My DD has experienced that shift in how she is perceived & it has made a world of difference to her!!!
I know this isn't the answer for all situations, but for my DD one on one with a supportive coach makes a world of difference. Then she is able to take the confidence she builds in the one on one situation & carry it over into her regular practice. Just thinking about your DD's past, I would think bonding with at least one coach very closely, might aide in her ability to trust coaches & her her own ability in general. Coaches do push gymnast to do things that our bodies try to tell us NOT to do. So having trust in the coaches is essential. But a gymnast also has to learn to trust her own abilties and a supportive coach can also play a key factor in that learning process.
Good luck to your DD!!! We always talk about the life lessons our kids learn in this sport and it is so true!!! I really think gymnastics can help them to learn to deal with so many different situations that will come up in their lives in the future. Gymnastics pushes them to face & deal with things at young ages that some adults never learn to deal with.
