I’m in Region 2, which was most impacted by the realignment. The only effects I have seen are that levels 3 and 4 are now excluded from regionals and the travel costs to attend regionals have increased dramatically (the region used to be drivable for the majority of participants but now it stretches over 4 time zones and the majority will need to fly for regionals). The USAG said that the larger regions would provide “more resources” but it remains to be seen what those resources might be. Our Regional Championship was a very simple affair. The awards presentation for my son’s session was a total mess but otherwise the meet was well run. The venue was a bit small so there wasn’t room for venders or photo-ops but they did musical shout-outs for $5 which was fun. And someone used AI to make a Region 2 anthem which was a hoot.
I am relieved that they are doing sectional camps instead of regional camps and that our section is just old Region 2, so nothing changes on that front. I suppose getting selected for the ETC is harder now but that does not affect many boys. I’d love to hear from someone on the inside what the point of this change was. It’s not yet obvious!
