How does it work to get to regionals? Do you have to get a certain placing at state? I also know there are something called all stars(?) which I'm super confused about.
I really want to go to regionals this year and I'm trying to gage my chance. Though I'm not expecting to go to regionals because last year (my first competitive season) I scored low 30s in all around (32-34) and rarely placed; but I would love to do regionals this year and I think I have improved. (I didn't have all my skills by myself last year). I've been xcel gold both seasons btw
Thanks 😊

For xcel, I believe it depends on the region. Some regions are a certain score and others are a percentage from state. We're in a percentage region and I don't think I've seen anyone make it with less than a mid 35

What state or region (1-8) are you in and what program does your gym compete,? (USAG, AAU, YMCA, etc.). This will narrow down a lot on how you can get to regionals (all of these programs have different requirements).

(for all examples, I will use my region, region 5, and the level Xcel Gold for you)

For USAG, You need a 35.5 AA score at your state meet (or a 9 on a certain event(s), to just compete those events at regionals)

For AAU, You only need to compete in your AAU State meet (no minimum score required)

For YMCA, You need to get a 33 AA at ANY meet you compete that season (you can get the 33 AA at your first meet of the season and you will be qualified)

I found your 2024 information. It will likely be the same for this year. For xcel gold, it is indeed a percentage of a percent at state, for a total of 112 from all states in the region combined, and I'm sure the exact numbers are released to coaches once all state qualifiers have been registered.

Here is both the screen shot and the link to the information.

You can look up last year's results from your state to see what it took to make the state team if you'd like, but if making regionals is a goal of yours, an average of a 9.0 (36AA) on each event at your state meet, would probably make that more realistic for you.

Here is the info for last year's regionals for region 6: https://www.region6usagym.org/regionals
The qualifying criteria are listed on the page, and more info is in the Information Packet document.
In short, the same percentage of Xcel gold gymnasts from each state make it to regionals, based on your score at your state championships.

I'm in region 6, and my gym is USAG.
Thanks for all the info!
We can help here!
The top 8 in each level (regardless from age group) from each state qualify as the state team. An additional 112 from all 7 states combined are taken on a percentage basis. I know it was 20 something in New York last year. Last year the gold cutoff score was a 36.775. It really depends on the year though, there have been tougher judging years where the cutoff is a 36.0 or some years where the cutoff is upwards of a 37.5. Good luck this season!
