DS is going to his first team day camp next week. We've been told to bring healthy snacks (high carb, low sugar snacks; fruits) drinks and lunch. Lunch is optional for two days- one field trip they are going to a trampoline park and doing a pizza lunch, the other to the beach and doing a lunch at a popular lunch spot. What are some great recommendations for snacks and lunches? Any advice for a first time camper?

It's from 9-5 M-F and they have some excellent things planned: team bonding for the boys, nutrition class, hygiene class, practices, specialists coming in, two field trips (see above) and a field trip to see a former olympic athlete and experience men's elite level training. I think my son is most excited about that, as it's one of his two favorite gymnasts that he will be meeting.

We'll let him do the optional field trip lunches (as most boys will be doing that), but I want to make sure he's taking good solid snacks and whatever else he needs for the rest of the week. This is his first time to go to day camp, he's done VBS, school, and parents night out at gyms, and he is super excited to be part of the team and invited/included in this team camp.

Thanks!

Also chicken salad, cottage cheese, guacamole or hummus and chips, string cheese, ham and cheese rolled together.

However that would be stuff I'd pack for my daughter who will actually eat stuff. My son is much pickier and I don't try much other than PB&J on GF bread, and oranges, and probably horrible for you sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade).

Fortunately he is not a picky eater. We pick our own fruits and veggies when the seasonal places open up and so far the only thing he hasn't liked is eggplant. Thanks for the tips. I want to make sure he's in line with the rest of the boys since this is his first team camp and he is new to team. When he was in transitional kindergarten I packed those fun lunches/bento boxes and he always gobbled them up. But I want to make sure he's doing what the others do now.

I really wouldn't worry about what the others are doing! For d, I would probably send: cheese sticks, hummus, peanut butter and crackers (not the premade kind, and if you can), nuts, Z bars, bananas, chocolate milk/protein drink.

Lunch would be sandwiches (ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly), yogurt, fruit, maybe some chips or pretzels, etc.

All of it would probably be together. D takes a huge lunch every day and just eats what he wants for lunch and snacks.

Check on the camp's policy regarding nuts--we had a camper a few weeks ago with a severe peanut allergy and were asked to not bring any peanut products at all (the child would have a reaction if they touched something that someone else touched if they had any peanut residue on their hands). Have fun at camp!

Thanks for the replies. All they have said is high carb, low sugar snacks, fruit and drinks. No nut restrictions. He loves just about everything (he is not a big sweets kid) so I've got some good ideas. Thanks.

The most important thing is that it is nutritious and that he likes it. Many people offer chocolate milk as a recovery, sports drink.
