I have see gyms that use these. I find it really weird.
What is it for?

I have no idea what a belly band is. I mean I am inferring that it is a band (belt?) worn around the belly (waist? hips?) but that's all I got.

It is suppose to provide a reminder to hold their belly in or tight. I personally think after a few minutes of wearing it, the gymnast forgets about it and no longer serves its purpose. Out HC has all the girls use one. But they also use it for some drills to keep hands together, etc. I don't know why he insists they wear it.

I have seen it used for emergency spotting.

If you're curious as to why they use them in ballet classes, it's so the instructor and the student can see at a glance if their hips are even with each other or if one side is popped up higher than the other. Ballet requires that the hips stay parallel to the ground.
