From what I have been reading, the judges "adjusted" Kohei's SV after reviewing the video footage, which is what bumped them up into 2nd. Not sure if that is the case or that they awarded value to that near face plant of a dismount. I sure hope it was the SV. I agree with you, Bog. Kohei is awesome, super-human...but that was not a dismount.

As for why they waited on the appeal...

If I'm not mistaken, they mentioned that the appeal required a cash payment that is non-refundable if they appeal is not decided in your favor. I'm thinking the Japanese didn't appeal until they realized their medal standings were at risk. Otherwise there would have been no real reason.
