My youngest dd has been in her group nearly 3 months now and is doing well, she is making steady progress in strength and flexibility, she has nearly got all 3 of her splits down and she can pull herself up on the bar (not head over the bar but head to the bar - she couldn't pull herself up at all when she first started). Dd has made improvement on the beam, she can do a forwards roll on the high beam and her leaps are getting higher - she was a little afraid of the high beam when she first started.

Dd's group is once a week for 2 1/2 hours and they do warm up and conditioning for around 50mins at the start of session and then go on beam and bars for the rest of the time until cool down at the end of the session which is around 20 mins, they sometimes go on the fast track but not very often. Dd's group have never been on the floor so far.

I am at a loss as to what sort of group dd is in and what they are working towards. The only info I have had so far is that dd's coach doesn't want them to do Grades and Competitions on 1 session week as it isn't far to them, the coach wants them to have another session but is struggling to find a time slot in the busy gym.

Is there any groups like this in other gyms in the uk? If so what are they called and what are they working towards?

I do think that every gym area is different.

In our gym there is a friends daughter who is 8. She trains once a week for 2 1/2 hours. She is in a rec group. Anyone competing trains at least twice a week, same for grades. I don't think once a week gives enough time to train competitively. They do, I believe, 3 pieces a day and so rotate the piece they don't do each week.

I don't think dd's group is a rec group as the gym did a dusplay at christmas for rec kids and dd's group wasn't asked to take part.

Dd's group doesn't really rotate week by week on the apparatus from what I have seen, they build on what they have done the previous weeks, they also do side stations for conditioning while they waiting to go on the bars, there is a lot of attention paid to form and a lot of repitition, from going by previous rec experience they usually rotate around all pieces of apparatus in rec groups. What puzzles me is the lack of floor work after nearly 3 months.

I have seen advanced rec groups and they do all pieces of apparatus and those sessions are 2 hours long once a week compared to dd's 2 1/2 hours.

Got something through the post today for dd from British Gymnastics, she got another membership card through the post - she has already got one for this year and it was a Bronze membership, she has now got BG Silver Club Competitive membership along with a watch, another sticker and a 2014 offical calendar. As I said above dd only does 1 day a week at the moment so I wasn't expecting her membership level to go up.

My oldest dd is doing competitions outside her club and has a invitational reginal floor and valut competition this weekend and she is also working on Grades and is planning on competing grades in April outside the region and she has only got Bronze membership - I am expecting her membership to go up, would there be any possibility that there could be a mix up and my oldest dd membership should have been upgraded and not my youngest's membership? My oldest dd has only been in gymnastics for 7 months.

ask in the office at your gym

That is what I am planning on doing, but the question is , is there any possibility that there has been a mistake and my youngest dd's name was put down for a Membership upgrade instead of my eldest. Both of my dd's are not in rec 1 hour sessions, my eldest is in the disabilities squad amd my youngest moved out of her 1 hour a week rec session in November (after the memberships were renewed for the year).

The reason I am asking is due to the free gift of the silicone watch - I don't want to give it my youngest dd when it was meant for the eldest. I have checked my youngest dd's membership cards for both Bronze and Silver level and both membership numbers match.

There was some confusion when my daughter's membership was changed from bronze to silver but BG easily rectified it.

I don't know if the strategy originates with bg gymnastics, her coach, or is a complete accident, but I really like that they are working exclusively on bars and beam. If you reviewed scores from groups of developing gymnasts, you'd find the average scores lower on bars and beam.

It is making a big difference to dd by just working on beam and bars at the moment, its making a big difference to her confidence, dd was afraid of the high beam a little when she started in her group, she now has the confidence to try forward rolls on the high beam (she could do them on the wider high training beam) and she has managed to do some without falling off, I was impressed when she tried some and fell of and had the courage to try again given that the high bar is nearly as tall as her.

Dd has always loved bars so is happy to spend a lot of time on them.

Do you mind if I ask what sort of confusion? Does you dd do competitive gymnastics? I am still learning as I go along as we are new to competitive gymnastics and don't understand the British Gymnastics Membership levels and what they mean, except that the higher the membership the better the free gift you get lol. At the end of last year both of my dd's got Bronze Club membership and got a sticker and a bendy pencil, my youngest dd has just got another sticker and a silicone watch with her Silver - Club Competitive membership (if it wasn't a mistake from BG - she is in a development group and will be old enough to compete this year as she is 7).

bronze got nothing this year bar a sticker and bendy pencil, silver got the watch (I have one with each), Silver is required if you compete out of county (ie your older daughter) - I would think there may well have been a mix up.

I think you might be right about there being a mix up, if nothing comes through the post for my oldest dd before her next gym session then I will ask at the gym, if it is a mix up at least my youngest dd will have a watch as I guess my eldest dd will get one eventually and then there will be no arguments.

I am a bit confused as to why my eldest dd was given Bronze membership when it was time to renew her membership as she was weeks away from competing a few hundred miles away from home in her first competition (it was at least 3 counties away even though disability rec children could take part - dd was in the disability development group then).

I'd just hide the watch! Don't think my dd has any idea what membership she is.

From memory I think they made her silver even though the club only entered her as bronze, took 3 different cards to get her name right and think she got a little 'lost' from the system when trying to move clubs. Nothing major and the club sorted it all out for me.

Just an after thought. Silver membership costs much more than bronze membership (£41 instead of £17). If the club had intended either daughter to be upgraded to the next level of membership they surely would have had to ask for more money wouldn't they?

The club that my dd's go to include the British Gymnastics Membership fees in the monthly cost so I have never had to pay for it seperatly except when both of my dd's first started, my youngest dd (who recieved the Silver Membership) has been with the club nearly 4 years starting at pre school level and my eldest started there 4 years ago taking rec classes but had to quit as she couldn't cope with the classes before joining the Disiability classes last Summer.

My eldest dd is working torwards her NDP grades that are competed out of the region so I will ask at the gym if there has been a mix up when we are next there, my youngest moved out of rec 3 months ago.

I would think there may well have been a mix up.

I asked at the gym and there was no mix up, my eldest is going to be upgraded to Silver as well. I am still confused as to why my youngest (7) has been upgraded as she only goes once a week (development group) with no upcoming competitions or grades being worked on, I guess all that could quickly change as the gym upgraded her membershi partway through the year.

The membership is not just if they are doing competitions. It is also relevant to the skills they are training. So if they are training harder skills they need higher membership.

Thanks for the info Jenny :) I am still learning about gymnastics as I go along. I am guessing that the higher membership level means more insurance cover to cover the bigger skills they will learn in the future, my dd has been in the development group for around 11 weeks and they are a new group , not sure what they are working towards i.e grades and competitions etc.

A couple of things have puzzled me, one is that this group is new and girls have moved up from rec groups into it and are slightly older then dd (7). they are around 9-11 (it's great that they are giving older girls a chance ) but why was dd put with them when she could be with girls her age (at school she is in a class with 6-7 year olds), and two if the girls need silver membership this current gymnastics year is it possible to learn bigger skills on one session a week.
