Hi! I have a gymnast with back issues who cannot tumble anymore as a result. She would like to flip on the beam, and had a RO BHS BT on the floor but cannot land a standing BT without a spot. I’m thinking of teaching her a LOSO since she has good BHS stepouts and understands how to flip. Is this a good idea? Could she do handstand + LOSO, to give her some power to flip? We don’t have a pit and she’s scared to throw standing/non-tumbling flips without a spot; does anyone have drills to ease her into it? I really appreciate it.

Disclaimer: not a beam coach here, just going by what I've heard from coaches who know beam a lot better than I do

A LOSO isn't really a layout stepout, it's a back pike where you leave one leg behind.

That being the case, I'd be hesitant to work it with a kid who can't do an unspotted standing back tuck, since it's basically a standing back pike.
