Its up to the coaches ,how many times they test. My first year doing TOPS we did 2 tests after that we have done 3. do you go out of state seeker?? Every test we have been to we have people from out of state as well..Maybe because Illinois tests are so small. We have also gone out of state but not far.. Like Indiana or Wisconsin

no, we have never gone out of state....just done our local state tests.

Just to report. Last test was the best of the 3. Out of 20 testers I had the only 7 yr old this test. There was one out of state team and another team that just came for physical abilities

If the numbers are down that much do you think that the whole TOPs system might be revisited. For instance might they ditch the TOPs B camp or will they keep that because it raises money against the National TOPs team camp (A camp).

Everyone is reporting tiny numbers for all ages of testers and mostly the same testers at each test.

Good luck to all the TOPs testers this year. I remember how tough the wait can be and how great it was to get little bits of information, so I thought I would pass this along from the USAG website (7/3 meeting minutes):

I. TOPs National testing
TOPs national test – discussion of flexibility tests and scoring. Steve Rybacki presented threeoptions for scoring flexibility. Committee would like to give a 1 to 36 point system on the newflexibility test. Flexibility score will be divided by 3, so 1 to 12 points is possible.


There was discussion about TOPs testing and adding a test that would show leg strength andpower. There was discussion about how to test leg strength. It was decided to add the sprint fornational testing and it will be weighted 10 points. This will be effective for national testing inOctober 2013.


The TOPs results will be figured as follows:
8 year olds 50% physical abilities and 50% skills testing
9 year old 40% physical abilities and 60% skills testing
10 year old 30% physical abilities and 70% skills testing
Distribute updates on TOPs to state testers and update info. on website

We did two tests. First test she flubbed the handstand hold which is why we went to 2nd. We did find out that my daughters points were 133 out of 142. So they thought she was about at the 93% score range. So we are hoping that is enough. She is 8 but tested as a 9 yo bc of birthdate. There were some younger kids testing when we were at our 2nd trial bc they were doing different tasks than my daughter. Anyone think this number will be enough

How is it out of 142 points? I thought it was out of 200.

The total points is 142, but the final score is calculated 60% skills %40 abilities. With that formula its 200 points. Her score is well over the 125 quilfing score for 9yr olds last year.

What has been the norm for typical cutoffs? Once there do they test and then put into A/B if they perform well. New to all this. What is diamond?

if that 133 score is out of 142, after calculating the formula that would probably be in the 170. It just depends if the 133 is before or after the calculation. The diamond team is only pertains to the 7yr olds.

I didn't realize that it was out of 200 points either.

So, could one of you "experts" explain how the scores are calculated? I am going to use hypothetical numbers. If a gymnast scored 50 points in each section (physical abilities and skills) and the gymnast tested as an 8 year old, would the calculation be as follows: (50/70 X .5) + (50/72 X .5) = 70% X 200 = 141?

IS that the number they are referring to when they talk about national testing scores? It seems like it would be more difficult to make it to National testing, like only the top 20 - 25%. Math is not my forte, so I am probably doing something wrong here. THANKS!

This 2011 scores are completely different. They only added skills in 2012, so that is all you have to compare. If I remember correctly in 2012 cutoff scores to make national testing were. 8yr 115, 9yr 125 and 10 yr 142.
