I mean I know what it is basically...where a gymnast stands on the low bar to jump to the high bar. But I've seen two versions and I'm not sure which one is the "real" squat on. The first version I've seen is were the gymnast casts and gets their feet to the bar from the cast. But I've also seen girls do what I would call a sole circle and then end up squatting on the bar.

So which one is the official squat on???

the real version is when you go straight from a cast! the one that's like a sole circle is an actual sole circle! some girls may end up trying a squat on but start falling back so they do a sole circle....hope i helped (:

My daughter is working on her squat on and, as you describe, it is a cast, then bringing their feet in to squat on the lower bar. Pip tends to either bring her weight too far forward which would be a face plant in the mats if her coach was not there, or her weight isn;t far enough forward, and her toes slip off the bars backwards which results in lovely shin bruises!

So the sole circle ends in with the student standing on the bar, right?

lol - it's good motivation to improve quickly! With her shin bruises from bars and her thigh bruises from beam, I'm half expecting to find social services waiting for me when I go to collect her from school...

Here's a youtube video of a squat-on... YouTube - ‪Squat On‬‏
Level 5 is the first level where you compete a squat-on.

MY definition of a squat on is "the bane of my daughter's existance for the past year." She had her kip before she had her squat on. In fact, I think it's only been the past month (now that she's training level 6) that it's finally getting consistant (though, in that way that she has, she never missed it in a meet). She has now discovered that she LOVES to "fly away" (here's a youtube video of a fly away... YouTube - ‪gymnastics flyaway at woodward camp‬‏ ) and if it takes a squat-on to get her up there to do it, then that seems to be the motivation that she needs.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm still learning what all the basic moves are in the levels higher than my daughter....which is pretty much all of them. LOL

Bella's mom... I'm the same way. :)

The above link will take you to an interactive web site that shows all USAG compulsory skills. A great learning tool.

I was just going to post a link to that site, it is so helpful!

The first is the actual squat on. The second is called a toe-circle and it's what gymnasts do if they miss the squat on and cannot jump to the high bar; they circle the bar to get back on top to attempt to jump again.

If we weren't on a different continent I'd swear you were talking about one of my gymnasts! in fact, mine still falls off more squat ons than she sticks. We've starting working on a new way to get from low to high!
