Our girls used to move levels at the beginning of summer--although they always uptrain. But this year they're having the compulsories (levels 4-6) move up in March--and next year it'll start in January (after their State meets in December are over). The reasoning? That gives them a good 8-9 mos at the level before competing (competition season starts end of Sep/beginning of October here for Compulsories). I THINK Optionals will still move up in June (can't imagine them doing it any other time!).

By doing this they'll also eliminate doing a spring season for those compulsories that didn't have their skills in the fall. Wondering what everyone else does...

We don't have an official "move up" date/month but everyone uptrains all the time and as far as my 9 year old is concerned she is done with L6 so she is "moving up" lol. She started training harder skills last night, and loved it, and our USAG girls also do USAIGC so she will start working on optional routines very very soon. She had optional routines last year and her FX was already modified as she competed as a specialist so for her there's not too much to learn as there is to improve. Our Level 4's will be working on their handspring vaults as that's whats done in USAIGC.

At J's gym move up time is Apr-May. She is beyond excited to move. She doesn't realize the only thing that changes is time and days.

Not quite sure how our new gym does "move-ups" but since DD's team is all 1st year 5's except for one I know we are already repeating & fine with that.

Our Gym does moves up in May. Our competition season is Jan-march/Apr for everyone (comp and opts) so that gives them plenty of time to "train' for the next Level/season.

Move ups are looked at twice in our gym. Summer move ups are set by a list for each level. You need to have all of the skills for the level and about 50-60% of the next level to move up in the summer. Winter move ups are if you have the skills for the level that you are moving too. When you move in winter you then compete that level for fall.

For the 2008-09 season our gym did not compete in the fall compulory season, everyone started out of state in Dec then competed in winter season at invitationals. Only 2 girls changed levels over the summer one 3 to 4 and one 4 to 5. So the majority of the gym did fall season at the level that they competed at last winter.

Now for the winter season, the majority of the gym moved up a level and that will be their level for next fall.

I really like this way. They get a lesser stress time for a new level, but then once the fall season rolls around they are that much more confident in there level.

Our main competition season goes from April-September. There are three common move up times.

1. January. As this is the beginning of the school year for us. It is the convenient time to move kids up and change groups. So they may work the new level skills in their old level group from september to december and move up in January.

2. July because this is after state and national championships. Levels 7-10 have nationals in July so often kids will move up after this. Level 6 and below states vary depending on which state you are in.

3. October. As the competition season usually finishes in September. Although there are some major competitions after this, many clubs choose not to participate because you could end up having a 9 month long competition season if you did.

Preteamers get moved up in the preteam classes whenever they show that they have mastered the level that they are in. Team tryouts and moving up for level 3, 4, 5, and 6 are in March. I don't know about the other levels because my dd is a preteamer who will start the level 3 competition team in March.

Our gym used to move up the weekend after state (November) for compulsories. If you got a call, your child moved up, if not, you didn't. It is always somewhat heartbreaking to go back to gym the following Monday to see who "made it" and who didn't.

Also, if kids quit, and a spot opens, then a child can move up anytime. Again, it is difficult to learn that one child in the group got moved, but the others didn't.

In other words, the kids are always ranked by who is best in each group. It doesn't matter how long the gymnast has been in that group. It could be years, while other kids are moved in and out.

I have to admit that it feels great when your child is "selected" to move up, but most of the time it can be discouraging to the gymnast.
