Does anybody know how to figure out which leg to lead with in a gainer dismount? Which leg kicks up vs which leg stays on the ground?

A twisting gainer or just a regular one?

Depends... if you want to connect it to something like cartwheel gainer then your bad leg should be on the ground. Otherwise you can just see what feels natural by doing a gainer start to flatback in the pit.

Regular.

I was practising to my back on a mat stack and found that my right leg stays on the ground and I kick up with left. However that may just be due to having the wrong distance to the mat stack? I'm confused because when I do split leaps or switch leaps, the left leg stays on the ground and I kick with right.

In cartwheels and round offs I go right foot - left foot - left hand - right hand - right foot - left foot. (I never know if that counts as a left or right carthweel that's why I typed it out).

I'm just a bit confused about what feels natural, haha. Do you see a relation to your switch leaps/split leaps / cartwheels with what your good/bad leg is?

You do a left cartwheel. Try kicking up with your right leg while your left leg stays on the ground to the mat stack, and see if you like it better/its more powerful. Im theory if you do leap with your left leg on the ground, then it might be stronger in taking off. Just try and see.

My good leg is my right leg. I do a right leg cartwheel (right foot right hand left hand left foot right foot) and in leaps my right leg kicks up (is in front). I gainer with my left leg on the ground.

Doesn't matter at all... use your good one.

If you are twisting... then you would kick with the opposite leg...
  1. Left twist... right leg kick
  2. Right twist... left leg kick

I do it off the end of the beam and I push off my good leg and kick the other leg up. This is the same action as going in to a change leg leap or how I jump on to the spring board for vault.

For a gainer dismount, your lead leg is usually the one that feels more natural to kick up. Typically, it’s the leg that's dominant for jumping or kicking in other moves. If you're unsure, try practicing with both legs and see which one feels smoother or gives you more control.
