Why did they do away with compulsories?

Here is a great video from the 1985 Worlds...this is the compulsory round. I remember watching the compulsories in the 1988 Olympics, it added such a level of perfection to gymnastics. In compulsories everything had to be perfect, no bobbles...every landing stuck. It was completely different from optionals...it was very exciting even though they all did the same thing. Simple skills done perfectly...why did they do away with compulsories?
 
Probably b/c they weren't interesting enough to the general public; they just want to see a lot of "flips".
 
Probably...too bad. It was a lot of fun doing the same routines as Olympians. Every gym in the nation had kids that could do the Olympic compulsory routines.
